Thank you so much, Nick and David, for the intel!

11am-1pm as David suggested is too late for me due to work, but I can do 8 am-10 am. Any takers for meeting at 8.00 am tomorrow (Wed 12/15) at Reservoir pond in Lyme, at the canoe/car-top boat launch? If so, please email me (erzo.l...@gmail.com).

Cheers,
Erzo

The cold tonight should set things up nicely.  I'd aim for higher elevation than Post or Storrs Pond.

I drove by Goose Pond (Hanover/Canaan, 625 acres) this morning and the north end in the narrows looks nicely frozen and smooth, but of course needs poking to verify.  The wide downwind southern end is open water and then wind-pushed spray ice closer towards shore and the dam.  Parking at the boat launch on the east side of the pond would seem to make sense and allow for some good exploration. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goose_Pond_(New_Hampshire)

To go higher elevation than that, Reservoir Pond on the Lyme/Dorchester border fits the bill (around 1,300' and 160 acres, average depth 12').  Anybody interested in a mid-day skate tomorrow (Wed. 12/15), say meeting at 11:00am when the temps will have climbed back to just freezing, then skating for a couple hours (e.g., 11am-1pm)?  We could meet at the canoe/car-top boat launch on the south end of the pond, but be warned the parking is quite limited and there's no cell service out that way. https://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/maps/bathymetry/reservoir_dorchester.pdf

Cheers,
david

Reservoir pond and Cummins pond in Lyme, NH past the Dart. Skiway are very good skating today. Thick ice, no cracks, flat, lots of real smooth plates. Cummins is a mile walk on icy road from Greens parking area. Fishing/public access on Reservoir is navigable.

Anyone have intel on current conditions since the rain?

I hear Miller Pond in South Strafford VT is very, very nice.  Wondering about these others.

Thanks in advance,
Jo

Four of us skated on Reservoir pond in Lyme. The parking is very limited, about 4 cars max if one car is parked in. The ice was great. Thick, smooth, and very few hazards. I’d give it a high 8. Apart from obvious hazards like rocks and streams, the only somewhat less obvious hazard we saw were some thin spots (one solid poke) at the far end, which we thought were caused by upwellings from a  nearby stream. The thin spots have a noticeably darker color are about about a foot in diameter.

Happy skating while it lasts!
