It’s easy for me to be irrationally exuberant when there is good ice on Willoughby lake. There is new black ice on the north end. 3 1/2 inches thick…excellent smooth gliding surface for about a mile north and up to a half mile wide. The best approach is from the boat launch and keeping to the north. There is still caution to be advised from the boat launch to the south, because of the incoming stream and the sandbar. There is a pressure crack running north/south in the middle that I chose not to cross because of the risk of wet boots .

The middle of the lake is less attractive and a bit difficult to access. Wind blown snow and ice in zigzag patterns. I chose not to attempt it.

The south end of the lake has wind blown snow about an inch thick. Plenty sturdy, but not my Choice for gliding ecstasy.

I will skate again in the morning on Thursday. I am willing to meet and or provide coaching for those who would like to experience this precious resource.
