Some more information about North Central Vermont skating… To add some detail to Kate‘s first post. At least 30 people skated the North branch river right off the Mill Pond Park on Elm Street. I put holes in six spots and found two spots with 2 inches and six baths with barely an inch and a half. Though the ice was noisy now and fell in. Should be even better tomorrow after another cold night but pretty safe now since 75% of the area is water that you could stand in if you fell in. Only a few parts are shoulder, height or deeper and those parts had some of the thicker ice. Skated almost 100 yards north of the Cumming Street bridge but that was marginal past the bridge. Hundred yards on the left before the bridge are also marginal probably the most iffy but very shallow.
So if you’re going to the bridge, stay away to the right. It’s about a quarter mile of skating maybe half a mile but fun, smooth ice for the most part.
Checked out Wrightsville reservoir and it’s in rough shape and not worth skating especially given how smooth it is on the north Branh River
Many thanks for all the wonderful reports today!!!
For those of you in Central VT, we are out skating on the North Branch of the Winooski in Montpelier. Beautiful black ice between the Lane Shops and the Cummings St bridge- so not a huge length but if you’re nearby, check it out.Parking for a few cars at the pocket park on Elm St.
