Ice abounds, and I am looking forward to opportunities for big lake skating again and realized I have some unanswered questions.

  1. Bob Dill has a lot to say about spring ice, including some interesting ways to test what stage it is at. In particular he highlights how a cold night can create the appearance of strength when it is only a thin veneer. I assume we are not at stage 5 or even 4 yet in the big lakes but would love any input. http://lakeice.squarespace.com/thawed-ice/
  2. What happens to these big plates in a wind shift and reaglomeration event (like i think just occurred on lake champlain) when temps are moderate? At 0 F I am used to seeing 1” of ice develop overnight in these cracks and everything holds together even in light wind. What happens in a 2-4 mph wind that’s different compared to colder temps?
  3. I want to go skating from BTV on Thursday morning before the thaw, anyone interested?

    Thanks,
David

I had a few follow up conversations with folks this morning, and I’m optimistic about tomorrow assuming the snow that fell is able to melt off in the sun today. Any reports from burlington would be greatly appreciated.
