Skating on Lake Fairlee (VT) today was superb, 8+.  Many different types of ice (black but not clear, white snow ice, huge areas of extraordinary patterns) with all but a modest section fantastically smooth.  With the warmer temp, day's end glossy light water layer will be pure glass if it refreezes without wind.  One major shore to shore crack, very wet, could be crossed with care towards the far end.  Use caution also around the drainages, pine point, skimmed over one-poke drain holes, all the usual and they were easy to see.  Two photos both show incredibly smooth conditions.

Anyone have intel on Goose Pond, on the Hanover/Canaan (NH) border?  How about recent report on Post Pond (Lyme, NH)?

Lake Morey is all open water.

Miller Pond in Strafford is very small but skateable.

Hi Dr Jo

The Lake Fairlee formation is spectacular.  At first I thought it might be a wave-break crack system but looking at a little longer it is clearly a snow-ice formation that forms parallel lines.  There was a similar event on Norway Pond in NH.  (big snow followed by big rain).  There is a similar formation that is pseudo-concentric rings around a lake star that we have seen several times on Shelburne Pond (VT).

Bob

PS: to visitors:  More pictures of the details of the features will help  understand these formations better. They are best seen with a drone.  A low sun angle might be helpful.  Some Shorter focal length pictures will help with some of the details.  Don’t let the scenery distract you from being careful on the ice.

Went out on the 30th and Fairlee was still as Dr. Jo reported, very good, and easily skateable through the light snow cover--a few veins completely clear.  Not sure what last nights precipitation did, and how it will re-freeze tonight?  We measured our distance yesterday.  Going once around the perimeter, we clocked 4.6 miles.  So even though Fairlee is 100 acres smaller than Morey, you can go a similar distance to the Morey skating trail.  Similarly Mascoma in NH was reported by Jamie Hess as very good yesterday, and that lake, east of the bridge is over 2 miles long, so also similar amount of skating available to the Morey skate trail. Fairlee and Mascoma almost always freeze ahead of Morey, but then often get snow covered.
