I hope everybody out there who is celebrating is having a great holiday. I know many folks may be interested in Skating on this holiday weekend. We have just had a thaw with region wide rain. This rain occurred, not only in the valleys, but also in the mountains. The good thing about that is that even the higher elevation ponds that folks were hiking to earlier in the season may have been resurfaced by this rain. Also the mid elevation ponds which folks were skating last weekend, have also been resurfaced, most likely. Most places are not going significantly below freezing Until tonight.
It is safe to assume that at this point most of the ponds have probably lost some ice thickness due to the thaw. It is also safe to assume that by Saturday morning they probably will be back to the same place They were if not a little thicker than when people were skating them last weekend.
In my neighborhood, the ponds with the thickest ice were Keiser pond near the Danville ,peacham vt town line . And Cole's pond Walden vt.
In New Hampshire, Beaver Pond in Kinsman, Notch and Long pond in Benton. New Hampshire might also be a good choice choices.
There are probably hundreds of other possibilities of places to skate,(looking back through the Listserve from the beginning of the season will give folks a sense of places that might be good) but since there won't really be time for reports to get out on Saturday and it's supposed to snow on Sunday I thought I would just give my thoughts so folks could could take the risk and head out to a destination on Saturday morning without waiting for reports .
There is snow flurries predicted on Friday in some locations although it is also supposed to be moderately windy so they could clear as they fall. Any reports as to Ice thickness or quality or whether snow fell be very helpful for everybody especially if folks get a chance to look on Friday .(there is a possibility there might be some good skating on Friday morning as well).
I hope everybody has a great holiday and happy Skating,Evan
