From midday today (Monday 1/12): There's some lovely ice at the south end
of the Pond, all the way across to the cliffs on the E shore.
As you venture further north, you'll hit a lot of patches of shell ice,
which you can skate through, but it's loud and not as smooth!

There is some shell ice but it can be avoided and there are some absolutely
lovely lanes of black ice with a few bumpier sections. An ice boat course
is set up and it's always fun to watch them speed by. The pressure ridges
have sunk and are hardly noticeable. I didn't go past Fish Bladder Island
so I can't vouch for anything further north but the rest was well worth the
drive.

There was a glimpse of the lake on this afternoon's satellite. My guess
is that the surface is bumpy, but the image shows black ice.

I skated for a few hours at Willoughby this morning, putting in at Devils
rock which is about a mile up from the south end and climbing down the
bank. There were lanes and sections of open ice in this part of the lake
between the cliffs. The surface was a crunchy orange peel texture with some
three-dimensional fully saturated drifts that were easy to skate over. As
well as some snow, drifts, and Styrofoam drifts that I avoided . not worth
traveling any distance for unless you really want to skate this lake.
Willoughby was up to its old tricks, blue skies as I was driving up and
pretty calm as I put on the ice with the snow squall building with wind
almost immediately.

They're scraping a section of Occom this morning (0.1 inch of snow last
night). After that I expect they'll brush it, probably done this afternoon
sometime. Maybe the snow on the rest of the pond will sublimate.

I saw a post from an ice sailor who had a fabulous day on “endless black ice” at Hero & Sandbar. Now I can’t find the post. Pretty sure he was out there today. Can anyone up that way confirm?Fingers crossed! Thank you,Cathy

From WebCams, it looked like that whole area got hit with snow squalls
which stuck to the ice "at above freezing temps " according to the heros
welcome WebCam at around four or so.

The ice on the north side of the sandbar was good for skating today and a
few people were out skating. There were patches of soft ice from the rain
that fell last night and hadn’t frozen solid yet. It was easy to skate
through these as the ice underneath was solid. An ice fisherman said the
ice is at least 7” thick right now.

Hello Skaters,
Today I checked out Lake Champlain and Otter Creek on the way to/from
Burlington to get baseline with the hope of understanding the dynamics
before cold temps and mixed precip again at the end of the week. Temp today
40-42 degrees. Wind flat calm.

North of the bridge on NY side the ice came in up to Mullen Bay before the
snow. Surface is highly variable with some open water.

Both Bulwagga Bay and the area north and south of the Champlain Bridge were
covered with lots of ice fishermen. I didn't measure but clearly the ice is
thick. In the Bay and around the Bridge lots of puddles, some slush, a few
rubble bands that have been melted smooth but are still raised and bumpy;
even some orange peel, and shell ice -- a lot of variablity. Fishing
activity is going to leave a lot of frozen ruts and tracks from foot
traffic. That said it looked like expansive, shiny new surface south of the
bridge, in the center of the Bay and heading toward Port Henry boat access
-- surface will be great if the snow doesn't stick this evening.

Dead Creek at Addison end has a lot of pooling on top of ice. Will probalby
refreeze nicely.

Otter Creek surface looked rough. There may be sidewalks but there is
moving, open water in the channel along Basin Harbor Road.

Button Bay, Arnold Bay and shoreline down to Hospital Creek are open
water.

Wide swings in temperature will bring wide swings in ice conditions.
ATTATT. Timely reports are gratefully considered. Have a good week.
