Checked out Wrightsville reservoir today with David Huck. It was quite nice with ice testing over 4 inches of solid ice. A number of checks around the main reservoir showed similar ice depths. on the north end near the beach, the ice was between 3 inches and an inch and a half at the most northerly section of the beach area. I personally would avoid the Northerly sections, especially up river until we get more cold weather. The ice was mostly covered with a quarter inch of almost loose snow, covering variety of surfaces in the middle, from Orange peel to organic orange peel to ugly fruit 🙂 The best ice seem to be along the sides. And it was sweet, until we found a clear lane on and off for about 500 yards on the west side, which was extra smooth, so that I got a bit spoiled after that point, and the rest seemed a little bumpier. But it was a wonderful morning. The two alerts are not to go too far north, especially up, river yet, and to watch out for the island just north of the boat ramp where I think there is a spring that makes the ice thinner… To the east side of the island. We may go out again tomorrow morning at Wrightsville or maybe check out Berlin Pond. Happy skating
