A separate group of 4 of us did a 15 mile two-causeway loop counter clockwise starting at Thayer Beach (Rossetti Natural Area). With the shifting winds we and protection of the shoreline we were able to avoid headwinds for most of the skate and had some glorious downwind runs. See attached track.
We encountered 2 pressure ridges to cross, one about mid-bay spreading west from Clay Point and a more significant one crossing the entire northern bay just south of the mouth of the Lamoille. Both were relatively easy to cross after scouting along them for a few dozen yards.
The ice we skated in the center of the bay was often a bit rougher than orange peel -- not unpleasant, but not glorious. We probably should have crossed slightly further west. We skated a lovely smooth lane parallel to the Route 2 causeway, between more rubbly areas. The best ice of our day was along the South Hero shore and then back across the western third of the bay.
