Beautiful skate on lake Morey this morning, textured black ice with small patches of powdery snow that you can easily skate through or around. Ice thickness is consistently 4+ inches across the lake.

Access from the town beach or boat launch  are both viable.

Thanks Danielle for reporting. That's great news and you saved me an hour RT drive on my lunch break to check it. 😁

From a friend with a house on lake Morey:

We have heard that due to insurance costs the resort is not going to maintain the skating trail any longer. Huge bummer!!

Maybe it will get worked out but doesn’t look good.

Great news! Thanks for reporting Danielle. It should only get thicker from here for a while. Sounds like there may be some snow showers in the forecast but wind blowing snow. Will also make this ice smoother overtime. Glad there is a good venue in the upper valley of Vermont.

Hi Everyone,

I just called the resort to find out more and there is a bit of confusion. It seems based on what I was told that the plans are for the trail to remain going forward but there is something in the works between the resort and the town as to who will maintain it. As of now, the trail is planned to open once the ice conditions allow and will be maintained this winter if conditions permit. She said that more will come out in a few weeks, but it seems like the trail will survive in one form or another.

Thanks,

Matt

Matt appears to be correct. The Lake Morey Resort's website says to 'check in mid-January for ice updates.'
You can also bookmark their Facebook page:
It sounds like Morey is perfect for 'wild skating' this week if you have safety gear and know how to read and test the ice.
It's difficult to open the trail when there isn't enough snow to make snowbanks!
Happy skating,
Jamie
