Ice Colleagues,
JR and I got a late start today beginning at Hero's Welcome Store. We got on the ice at around 1pm and skated about 6 miles north. Wind was vicious from the west. The ice was a consistent 3" thick and strong. Black ice for the most part. Some wet cracks but no pressure ridges and the plates were seemingly locked in place. Some very light snow in the lee of the shore, but easily skated through. There were rough patches in some spots but very smooth in others. Quite a mix of surfaces, but all very skateable especially with Nordic blades. I didn't take any photos but did a couple videos that I will post on my YouTube channel.
On the way to and back from North Hero I visually observed that the ice was smooth and with little snow cover from at least the mouth of the Chazy River north over the Canadian border on the NY side and from the Canadian border to at least North Hero on the VT side. The Gut looked good and when we crossed over to check Carry Bay we found 6"+ ice. From a distance it looked scabby. And it was but there were ample lanes of smooth ice through the scablands. The point is you don't know until you know. Even ice that looks crappy from a low angle may actually be quite nice up close. It looked to me that you could skate to Canada from Rouse's Point. There is open water under the bridge but you can put on on either side and head north. The Chazy River looked incredible. Park at the boat launch (

All in all the north end of LC is a dream. Get it while you can.
Respectfully submitted,
Dan
