On Saturday morning 10/18 I hiked up to lakes of the clouds my Washington nh via ammonusuc ravine trail. The larger pond was about 3/4 covered with a half inch skim. I was able to skate about half of the smaller pond, all of the area pictured in gray was supportable, including a sidewalk that went most of the way around the pond. The supportable thickness ranged from 1 1/2 to 2 inches, so pretty marginal. I was able to test everything thoroughly since it is such a small area. Quality was slightly bumpy, refrozen, slush, and some smooth about half-and-half.
It was a beautiful sunny morning with no wind, T-shirtweather! So nice to be on skates again! Unfortunately, the weather went well above freezing that morning, and is expected to stay above freezing in the mountains for several days. But more to come! For folks interested in hiking to some of the higher elevation ponds please be prepared with traction, perhaps Ice an axe And full gear for an Alpine environment.
This was the earliest I have ever been able to skate in New England, my previous earliest date was October 27 of last year on the same pond.
