Hello Everyone,

Chris Boone and I braved the predicted -40 degree windchills and temps of -7 to skate the once in a decade black ice on Lake Willoughby and we were not disappointed. It was exceptionally clear and hard black ice, making me wish I had sharpened my skates.  Park at the north end beach. You can skate south for almost 4 and a half miles. As Evan had stated, the first mile or so on the south end was open water. It had a slight partial skim on it and was steaming in the cold air. There was also two open water holes, one quite sizable on the eastern shore. These all may be skimmed over tomorrow morning. The rest of the lake is covered in thick, clear black ice with intricate subsurface cracks. We did not measure the thickness, but it looked to be about 5 or 6 inches. If the open water is skimmed over, it should be easily differentiated by the lack of these cracks. Most of the surface is smooth, it is a bit bumpy for the first mile or so coming down from the north beach. There are lots of well healed cracks and no pressure ridges or other hazards that we saw. Right off the beach at the put in is a little open water so just enter to the left of this. Enjoy this rare opportunity and bring a good camera, this is one of the most beautiful places with some of the most beautiful ice you will ever see. Truly special. So good you may even see me there again tomorrow afternoon.

Matt

Thanks for the stellar and tempting report. A couple of us From Burlington are planning on Monday foray to Willoughby assuming today’s Southwind doesn’t disturb the pristine report! If interested, give a shout out. Probably Around 9 AM.

Just an update, I got word from a friend that there is about a quarter inch of snow at lake will be last night, not enough to impede Skating , but probably enough to make ice white

I just got another update. It looks like it’s more like a half inch on like Willoughby winds are fairway light up there today, and are projected to remain so for most of the day, I think it’s unlikely to blow off today, although I definitely will tomorrow.

I got called in for work tomorrow but I am hoping to skate Willoughby on Wednesday.  Preferably with company.  Anybody interested?

We skated from the North almost the length of the entire lake to the South yesterday, but the ice got very thin towards the end. It is easily differentiated by lack of cracks/exceptionally black. Winds were strong, but what a skate 🙌🏼. Well worth the send if there is still ice! See video attached : )
