Have you ever been out on the lake and wished that you could see where you were in relation to the pressure ridge you saw in yesterday’s satellite imagery?

Using the OsmAnd app and the instructions below, you can see your track and real-time position overlaying recent satellite imagery while you are out exploring the ice.

Please be aware, this requires a complex setup process and may require a bit of fiddling to reliably get the imagery set you want. That said, it does work and I can attest that it is quite fabulous to be on the ice and following one's position and recorded track as it traces over yesterday's imagery.

Happy skating!

I’ve been doing this too and agree it’s really useful.

One twist: if you have a Garmin watch you can see the same thing on your wrist without taking out your phone.  From Copernicus you can export a KMZ file (“Download image” button on the right, then set image format to KMZ/JPG under the analytical tab) and copy it to the GARMIN/CustomMaps folder.  There’s probably a similar method for other watches.

I haven’t tried it, but for OsmAnd it might be easier to import the KMZ file than to use the online maps plugin.
