We have skated most of newfound Lake except for the northern third. We put in at Wellington State Park. The ice in general was about 2 1/2 inches in the middle of the lake off of Wellington, closer to shore and south of Wellington, it's probably a little closer to three. As you head north on the lake it gets a little bit thinner with plates that are just above to, I found one hole with a Loon in it, Loon rescue has been contacted. And another open hold all by its lonesome potentially on an old thin ice pressure ridge.
Once you get to the northern third of the lake, there is a rubble band. Pass that The ice is a bit less than 2 inches but supportable, I chose not to travel on it because there are open wind holes, as well as some wind holes that look like they were recently closed. You can travel quite far on thicker ice up the eastern shore of the lake, not quite as far on the western shore. This lake is really prone to produce severe pressure raging, there is none here right now, but I assume at some point there will be so keep that in mind if you choose to skate.
