Ben and I had a quick beautiful sunrise skate from Charlotte Town Beach this morning.

We were able to find some good lanes and catch a decent amount of black ice lanes. Headed north for a while and then back south near the shore.

Heard one big boom but otherwise the ice was calm and quiet. The beauty of a dawn skate… We did cross a skimmed over lead that was maybe half an inch thick and saw a lot of evidence of movement. Most ice we were skating was 6 inches.

Have a great day!

There are South winds building today and reports of open water to the north, in the areas between Willsboro point and the Four Brothers islands…
Similar conditions to last Tuesday’s ice rescue…
Stay alert.

Tuesday 2/10, 10am-12pm, we were surprised to find the ice off of Charlotte Town Beach was very stable. The area is loaded with big beautiful black plates. Just out from the swimming area, we could see through to the bottom.

One 10" wide crack roughly parallel to shore was well healed over (though pokable), and just slightly wet. This in comparison to the intense network of seeping cracks we experienced in the same area on Monday Feb 2, the day before last week's rescue. Last week, the ice was 3.5" thick; today, it looked about 5-6" (we didn't measure). Today the ice was relatively quiet—quieter than on any other day I've skated this year.

It was an easy run south to Sloop Island, with rubble everywhere south of Sloop.

Looking west, the ice went out as far as we could see. I would've loved to explore it, but given the incoming weather and open water to the north, not a risk for today.

Could someone post current Lake Champlain ice conditions, considering a trip tomorrow?
Thanks

So sorry to report. It looks pretty well snow covered. The snow we got had a pretty high water content so I think it has a higher potential of sticking. This is as observed from the Burlington waterfront.

Similar view from lower Shelburne Bay.   Several inches of snow as far as I can see.  A few isolated areas in the middle are wetting out, I can't tell if they are crusting over or are still slush.   I've see a cross country skier heading up and down the Eastern shoreline for a few mornings.   In any case, southern Shelburne Bay doesn't appear to have any skating opportunities.
