I was able to lay eyes on a few bodies of water today. It appears that most of the lower elevation ponds have a gray slush surface on them, the moisture on the ice, having absorbed all of the snowfall for the most part.
Moore reservoir as viewed from the dam in Littleton, New Hampshire,(pictured below)has lots of very smooth looking gray ice, these smooth sections were relatively thin, black ice before this last round of thawing, some of them were as little as 3 inches thick. Some of them thicker they all froze at different times .in any case the surface looks good on the whole wide area in Front of the dam going back about a mile or two east on the reservoir. Not sure if any of this will be supportable as of tomorrow morning, but probably in a in a couple days for sure . the rest of the reservoir looks like it has resurfaced as well but a little more patchy some gray areas some white areas but it looks like at least 75% gray areas, the rest of the reservoir as you head east, at least as far as I could see, excluding the area in front of the dam I mentioned above should be quite a bit thicker ice that will be supportable as soon as the surface slush freezes, maybe by morning. I would recommend trying to access from old Waterford Road and make sure to bring a long board with you as I’m sure the sidewalks are paper thin and they may be wide. It is possible that it might not easy to get onto the ice for a couple days. But it does look like there are many miles of good skating out there in the future days.
Stiles pond in Saint Johnsbury Vermont was about 80% gray and also should be good Skating soon.
Symes pond in Ryegate vt is also probably going to be very good in a day or two given its low elevation
I saw Molly’s Falls reservoir in Marshfield Vermont yesterday it was in similar condition. It has snowed a little since then, but I’m assuming it’s probably about 75% ice that you could skate on the rest probably being lumpy.
Higher elevation, ponds like Joes pond may still have a snow surface although Joes Pond was about 20% gray yesterday afternoon and could’ve continued to resurface.
The weather forecast looks good for the week with the exception of some snow showers predicted possibly for monday night, I would say Monday would be the best day to guarantee getting on snoy free ice on the bodies of water that had thick ice going into the thaw. obviously edges ,in flows ,
out flows and any weak spots are to be given Great care . All in all, I am very pleased with how things turned out, considering that we did get anywhere from one to 3 inches of snow in the area at the end of the thaw looking forward to hearing reports from others!
