After a cold night, 13 degrees, there was easily another inch of ice today.
Yesterday was 1 1/2  - 2 1/2 inches.
Today was 2 1/2 - 4 inches.
It was about 20-24 degrees during our skate. Cloudy as compared to yesterday’s sunshine. The wind was slight, South from 6-9mph. (As compared to yesterday, North 10-14mph).
The whole lake is quit nice. Mostly #7-8 and There are very nice large areas of #9 scattered everywhere.
There were many skaters today.
A group of 4 from Keene skated early.  One of them went through in very shallow water at the outlet at the very North end.  Got wet to his waist and skated back with ease to the launch area which is at the South end of the lake, about a mile straight away.
Small groups came from Willsboro and Essex. Some with first time kids skating.
Since I posted on the Vtgroup yesterday there were even three skaters from Charlotte and Hero island who took the ferry over and skated.
(legally, with Covid restrictions, Vermonters can come to New York, but the opposite is not true)
They arrived as we were leaving, (after 3 hours of skating), the wind was picking up quickly, I trust they had a good skate. Right now the wind is South 12-16mph and increasing...
Be safe, have fun, watch the weather.
Happy and Healthy New Year to all.
Respectfully submitted,
Tom d.

Great skating on Lake Fairlee today. Lots of black ice with a thin skim of loose snow. Depth 2-4" everywhere. Our group of 5 made 2 circuits around the lake. 3 or 4 other parties skating but no ice fishers.

Kris

Lake Morey is still mostly open though south end looked possible ( but not worth with LakeFairlee so good close by).

Ice Report, 12-30-20

--Spring Lake, Cuttingsville, VT: Solid #7-#9 ice throughout, some snow ice with lovely concentric patterns, some black ice (mostly in the middle of the pond). Even the drain holes were 3"-4" thick. Ice elsewhere was 4"+ with the exception of around beaver dams, lodges, inlets and outlets.

--Lake Ninevah, Mount Holly, VT: I only scouted this from the State Fishing access on the north end. Did not skate. 5"+ thickness, but quality was only in #4- #5 range. I think the heavy snowfall of 12-16-20 combined with relatively high elevation prevented the snow and slush from fully melting and resurfacing.

--Echo Lake, Tyson, VT: I scouted this from the south end, small pullover just north of Kingdom Hill Road (across the road from the Echo Lake Inn). Lovely smooth snow ice, #8-#9 quality. Not sure if the ice is continuous further north on the lake. Open water around the outflow on south end. I plan to skate here tomorrow if my skating partners agree. The lakes to the south in this chain all have some amount of open water (or recently skinned over).

Call with any questions,

Doug Fontein
