This heat leaves us wondering if it will ever cool enough to skate again. Well sone predictions have started to come out, and they look real hopeful. Last year they predicted a great snow year, that came out in July, and they nailed it.

Both of these showed up today
This one of fall looks like a good start and hopefully some early skating.

Then there’s the winter one that really brings in the deep freeze. Wouldn’t it be great to see the lake freeze completely?

This is what we can do in the meantime. Roberta has talked me into getting out on my terrifying inline skates. I actually have started to enjoy them.

In four months, we should be heading to higher ground looking for ice. Almost there,

Hi Diana, hoping for a decent winter here in Minnesota, last two disappointing in general for snow, but we did get great lake ice for skating last winter, and that was a great compensation.

I will be in Bangor, Maine October and November--it would be too early here for skatable lake ice, also too early in Maine?  Not sure if this group is all NE?

Best, S

Certainly a chance the end of November.  Pushaw Lake is shallow and freezes early and there are many small ponds.  Best to check with Richard Behr copied above as he lives in that neck of the woods.

I'm still swimming without wetsuit as it's 80F!  I try to minimize the days between lake swimming and lake skating.

Best,

Laura

Laura,

I hope to find supportable ice in the Rangeley area before the end of November.  Three of the past four seasons I have found skatable ice before December arrives!   I'll hope for the best.

And in the interim, the lakes are lovely to swim!

I still look to the Adirondacks of NY, partially because they are close to me, but also they are COLD! Already Saranac Lake has had several nights in the twenties, and tonight it is expected to get down to 21 Fahrenheit. That water has to be cooling nicely.
