We scouted Symes pond in Ryegate this morning, It was about 13/4 to 2” Ice thickness. The surface was bumpy snow ice, some orange peel texture smooth ice And lots of more bumpy textured ice. Along the shoreline is the ice is smoother and there is a section of black ice towards the far end of the pond that will probably not be thick enough by tomorrow morning but may be thick enough by the next morning. We chose not to skate as the ice was thin and we had another venue that we were on our way to. I think it is Worth a shot tomorrow for those with the skills to navigate thin ice. If you have not been there before it has a long unmaintained access road That is best navigated with snow tires and all wheel drive. I think there are probably many other small shallow swamps and ponds that will have some decent skating tomorrow, particularly those that had very thin ice before the snow storm a few days ago ,many of those have resurfaced to some very nice smooth ice.
