We skated from the boat launch adjacent to Fort Ticonderoga yesterday afternoon. The ice was mostly covered by thin drifts of snow when we started but a steady breeze blew the ice significantly clearer while we were out there. The ice seemed very thick everywhere we ventured (didnt measure, but couldnt find anywhere that could be poked through). We went a couple miles south first, and then ventured north up to about the paper mill. The ice surface was variable with some frozen over shell ice and ice that was slightly porous on the surface, but there was plenty of nice orange peel throughout. The best ice we found was north of the boat launch and on the opposite side of the bay. Not the best ice ever, probably not worth traveling for from the north, but an enjoyable skate overall.
