Greetings Ice Hounds,

Just got back from an attempted skate on Champlain. Epic ice everywhere! But also howling winds, great for a downwinder but I didn't plan it out. Also checked Arrowhead Lake in Milton/Farifax and the Mississquoi around Swanton, neither looking great. Hoping for a better attempt next week.

Returning home it was almost dark when I drove past the new plate but it appears to have survived today’s light south wind. Currently the ice line is stevenson bay. It will take scouting in better light to confirm the open holes I spotted.

All that remains of the new plate is a U-shaped strip of ice that extends from the Port Henry pier to the Champlain bridge. This isn’t worth driving far for but if you’re close by it could be a fun little outing….as long as the wind isn’t blowing from the south like it is today.

The fisherman’s truck was Not running, but he did have a diesel heater in
the truck!
***Please note Kevin’s mention of careful
Scouting!
It really was a beautiful day to skate with friends. That said, There was
lots of open water and just skimmed over places. They can be very
deceptive. There were more than a few times when we joked, “water to the
left and water to the right”.
The inland Sea is much “safer”, it’s a huge area with fewer apparent
hazards and many miles of scouted and skated ice.
That said, jeez, there is just so much good ice out there. Where the heck
have all the scouts been this past week?!
Also, it seems that none of my posts and pictures have not been going
through this season. I hope this one does.
Thank you,

Just some facts to get the info out quickly.

We did an unplanned tour on the new plates east of Isle Lamotte today. We left the Dillenbeck public access for the "gut" and headed south with intentions to cross over to the inland sea at carrie bay. I couldn't help myself and climbed to the top of an old rail bed for a peak at the other side and the rest is history. If you go bring microspikes. There's a fair amount of rubble to cross to get onto the new ice. I would call the conditions spicy 2 out of 3 because of the numerous holes with only a skim of ice begging for a skater to come swim. Black ice in full sun was expanding like crazy. Just about every poke sent cracks off in multiple directions. On the way home Tom and I did some additional scouting. There are a couple of places NY skaters could access the ice. Monty bay would be the best. The west side of Isle Lamotte appears to be the same. It may take a little work crossing rubble and rough ice but I think it's possible to go all the way around the island. Others can add to this. We ran into a guy fishing through a hole in the floor of his car. Wild day!

Best,

Kevin

Has anyone checked out the ice from the Van Everest fishing access at the
Milton/Georgia border?

I skated it yesterday. The conditions there are consistent with all the
other reports from the inland sea. Halfway between there and heros welcome
there's a pressure ridge that had open water yesterday. When going from Van
Everest to Sandbar, there's a pressure ridge about a half a mile before you
reach Sandbar.
Georgia boat ramp on the other hand is not good, lots of frozen snow and
rubble.
If you have time for the drive, Holcomb access on isle lamotte is superb
ice right now. The good stuff starts right near shore.
