This morning I spent a glorious sunrise skating Newfound and then had to rush to work to keep from getting fired so I apologize for the late report. I did not get to explore the whole lake but Jamie and Evan did a good job reporting the southern half yesterday. Today I left from the Wellington boat launch and skated north all the way to the north end along the west shore. It was all nearly perfect black ice about 3 inches thick until you get the the point where the normal pressure ridge forms at the north end of the lake. There is a healed crack there as of this morning. Beyond this, the plate north is thinner, probably closer to 2 inches but was strong with no cracking underfoot this morning with the temp around 0. I crossed the lake to the east shore just south of the line where the old gray ice fills the extreme north end of the lake. Heading down the eastern shore their i

s clear ice with spectacular bottom viewing for miles. Once I reached the point across for Wellington, I crossed the lake back to the west to leave for work. The whole southern area down to the islands and Pasquaney Bay also looked spectacular. As noted yesterday there were quite a few windholes. Each one I found was supportable but I certainly did not find all or even most of them so be very careful and approach all of them with extreme caution, constantly assessing and testing. Otherwise the whole lake is skateable. Enjoy this great ice if you can this afternoon and hopefully the snow is light and blows off.
