Hi Carl, No conversation about Nordic skating in Vermont would be complete without mentioning Pam Pearson, who is also a member of our Google group. It was Pam who, in February 1999, first introduced me to Nordic skating on a lake near Stockholm while she was living in Sweden and working for the US State Department. When I returned home to Vermont, I wrote an article about skating in Sweden, which was published in the Sunday Rutland Herald and Barre-Montpelier Times-Argus, and which you can read here: http://nordicskaters.org/nordicskating/viking/index.html (click on "The story begins here...") You might say that article launched the Nordic skating phenomenon in Vermont and New Hampshire, and from there it spread across the continent. Among the early adopters who foolishly believed me when I said "You're gonna love it!" were Brian Remillard, Hilary Linehan, Dan Snipes, Kathy Jones, Peter Flanagan, Marsha Fraser, Ed Cheramie, Martha Cochran, Peter Doyle, Phyl Newbeck, Vince Rossano, Jan de Vries, and others too numerous to mention. Bob Dill and Evan Perkins gravitated to the sport somewhat later, but their contributions are equally legendary: Bob for his 'Lake Ice' website, and Evan for his trailblazing pursuit and spot-on reporting on the best 'wild ice' in northern New England. I wish I could tune in your show tomorrow, but I'll be on the ice teaching an 'Intro to Nordic Skating' clinic. Hope the show goes well. How about a sequel? Best, Jamie |

Thanks, Jamie. I'm not going to try to be even-handed or exhaustive or anything on the history of Nordic skating in Vermont, but the more tidbits I have to throw into the conversation, the better it's likely to be. So that's helpful info! You can listen for up to two weeks afterwards at wgdr.org/archive, if you wish. Probably a sequel would be a good idea! Cheers, Carl ________________________________ From: vtnordi...@googlegroups.com <vtnordi...@googlegroups.com> on behalf of Jamie Hess <nordi...@gmail.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 18, 2023 7:24 PM To: Carl Etnier <ca...@etnier.net>; VTNordicskating <vtnordi...@googlegroups.com> Cc: jdev...@together.net <jdev...@together.net>; vtph...@gmail.com <vtph...@gmail.com>; jansi...@gmail.com <jansi...@gmail.com>; Kathy Jones <kathy7...@gmail.com>; mars...@vermontel.net <mars...@vermontel.net>; tinki...@gmail.com <tinki...@gmail.com> Subject: [vtnordicskating] Re: Radio interview Thursday morning re Nordic skating? Yesterday's hard ice was better but required dodging somewhat grabby drifts and finding lanes. Today, most of those drifts were slushy and easily skated through (see photo). Unlike yesterday, the whole north end was in good condition, some slight surface water, slushy patches, skateable. The southern end had some softer sections even those were manageable. I wouldn't have wanted to be on hockey skates, though. Overall a nice find given the brief sleet last night and warmth today. One complete circumnavigation plus some playing around = 9 miles (see track). Tonight's dinner is yellow perch thanks to generous fishermen! Note: Many fishing shacks are coming on to the lake now and, if like other years, the ice will soon be heavily tracked by ATVs, sleds, footprints, etc. Fishing license holders have the right of way parking at the F&W access. There is a large pullout just north of it, on the water side, with easy ice access. May be able to park head-in to save space for others. [cid:242a59fb-a8e5-4f81-a519-f0549744371a] |

Fifteen years ago yesterday, Jan DeVries created this listserv which was originally on Yahoo. He and I had been discussing how useful it would be to get reports from all over the state about ice conditions since both of us lived in towns without decent-sized bodies of water. Fifteen years later, this group has exceeded expectations. We have 668 members and this year we've had a bunch of new voices providing input on skating surfaces across the state. In addition, we have had some good conversations about safety and gear. This is a thank you to everyone who has scouted and reported on ice. Remember that even if the conditions aren't good or if you saw a potential surface that is still open water, all information is useful. Skate on! -Phyl |

It doesn't seem like that long ago when we were celebrating that we'd reached 100 members on the listserv. |

Some snowy mini-dunes to dodge or to “brace and glide” through. The south end is better, with far fewer drifts and is best accessed from the boat launch on Route 5. The photo here is in the northern half. |
