Miller Pond in Strafford late this afternoon:  Couldn't get on the ice anywhere from the parking lot because several inches of water lurked below thin ice at the edge.  Two pics attached, you can see where I broke up edge ice.  Couldn't poke through the ice 2+ feet from shore with multiple attempts.  Seemed quite thick with a nice surface and a board would make access easy.  I've never skated this pond, as always use caution.

Also dropped by Post Pond.  Has very nice looking ice surface on about 85%, almost certainly too thin to skate, with a lot of open water at the put-in so completely inaccessible there.

Elfin Lake (Wallingford, VT) Report, 12-27-20

4" of #7 ice on Elfin Lake today. I skated many laps. There was a moat of thin ice/water that was easy enough to find access over (only 1'-2' wide). Interestingly, ponds higher up in Tinmouth, Danby 4-Corners were much worse skating conditions due to wind rows and piles of frozen slush resulting from the 30"-40" of snow that had not fully melted during the rainstorm. Tomorrow will warm up into the 40's after dipping below freezing tonight. So anyone wanting to skate this pond should go early to avoid moats that will probably grow fairly large by afternoon.
