The purple line is our track so far.  We are just shy of the dam going under bear trap road.  This is the most solid ice I may have ever been on a river with lots and lots of very smooth gray ice under a thin skateable snow cover.  The further up you go past route 2 the prettier, agricultural.

I row a rowing shell on the Lamoille River, right where you skated today. You skated past the boathouse where I keep 2 rowing shells.  It is very a beautiful trip up that river, but you could not pay me enough to skate on that. I am glad it went well, but the currents , especially under the bridges can be strong, as the river narrows through there. The rt2 bridge can be scary in the rowing shell because of the current. Just a heads up from someone who knows that river very well.  I do have to admit I am a little envious. That had to be a spectacular skate especially through the rock ledges. But no thank you on that one. I will wait until summer to row it.

Thanks Jo for posting, I went over and gave it a run later in the day.  I did note that the prior skaters tracks hugged the shoreline under the bridge, and I did the same.

Hello All--

I was with Jo, Chip and Phil traveling up the Lamoille River today, portaging around the dam and then turning back (bubblers at the dam and a steep embankment made it difficult to get on stable ice farther upstream of the dam).

The river is frozen rock solid with smooth ice.  We couldn't poke through.  This darn cold weather froze the Lamoille River well.  Normally, I avoid rivers, but I wasn't concerned today.  It's smooth, solid ice with a light snow cover.  Not sure what the weather gods will bring tomorrow.

Always hug the shore while near  bridges (road salt and currents prevent good freezes) and test, test, test with ice poles and not ski poles.    Of course, travel in groups and watch out for each other.  Stay in line.  I was the weakest skater today  and was third to last in our line traveling up the river.

Today was fantastic skating on the Lamoille River and a special treat.

Safe skating!
