Good Skating Monday on Lake Fairlee

At mid-morning on Monday (before the sleet) there was beautiful ice from end to end on Lake Fairlee. We started at the northern end which has seen very little activity and is wonderfully smooth. Opposite Treasure Island there are some remnant vehicle tracks but these have been largely erased by the recent rain. Only occasionally were there areas where the ice is rough or there is shell ice. These are easy to spot and avoid. Even the areas where there had been snow beforehand were solid, with an orange peel texture. The pressure ridge running across the narrowest area halfway up the lake can be skirted on the eastern side, as was the case before the rain. The open expanse on the southern half of the lake is generally good, though the area closer to the boat landing has many shanties and fishing holes to be avoided. Overall, this is about as good skating as you can get on Lake Fairlee, especially since it has not been heavily driven over by vehicles as it usually is by this time of year. To avoid the congestion and disturbed ice at the boat landing, try entering at the pullout along Route 244 just south of Aloha Hive. This avoids crossing the pressure ridge and gives you direct access to the smoothest ice at the northern end of the lake.

I made a pretty simple sharpening jig the holds the blades and using a file
or stone works pretty well. The blades keep the file or stone level so you
get sharp edges.

You sharpen both blades at the same time which keeps your file or stone
level and square with the blade.
