The Lake Morey skating trail in Fairlee, VT is in. It's about 3.5 miles long and a whopping 20 feet wide. The black and gray ice is smooth and dreamy - you will find yourself lulled into a meditative flow state before you know it. Do yourself a solid and head over there if you can.

I accessed the trail via the Fish & Game boat launch. There is some snow that you need to go through to access the trail. Jo reported that there are signs which say no parking or access to the skating trail at the Resort (at this time) as the town is now maintaining the trail. Launch options are the town beach (currently no parking) and the boat launch. Parking options are the boat launch and the parking for the Golf Course (you can walk to the town beach from there).

Thanks for the report & pics, Kara!

Here's a little more information:

Access to the skate trail changed this week.

The town is now officially responsible for plowing the trail, not the resort.  There are signs prohibiting access to the trail from the resort and there is no plowed path from the resort to the trail.

Signs direct you to the town beach, a short distance down the same road.  However, today the parking lot was gated with many 'no parking' signs.  You could park across the street from the resort near their golf/skate rental building and walk to the town beach, or drive halfway up the west side of the lake to the small signed fish and wildlife access where you will need to skate a modest distance through some mixed surface ice under snow to get to the trail.

Lake Morey Resort will open for skate rentals starting Friday January 17.  I am guessing that is when the gate will be opened for parking at the town beach but do not know for sure.  It's not a large parking area so you may end up parking across from the resort anyway.

It's not a great idea to walk in your skate boots (can weaken the area  holding the binding bar), so maybe wait to change into skate boots until you're at the beach. There are many changing benches on the ice.

As Kara noted, there is a beautiful 20-foot wide (!) plowed path along with a large plowed open area by the beach.

If the town is maintaining the trail now, the town should be providing parking at the town beach. What a screwed up mess. It seemed the trail was something which brought the resort business in the winter. What would make them want to stop maintaining it, and no longer welcoming skaters?
It doesn’t sound like it’s worth the effort any longer.

Word from the Lake Morey Inn is their insurance company will no longer cover the Inn if they continue to maintain the trail. The town is holding a meeting today to discuss they same issue - whether the town will be able to maintain insurance for the town if they take it over.

Work in progress......

I'm thinking of going to skate on Lake Morey this Thursday and wondering if anyone else would like to go together? I'm in Charlotte but we could meet up somewhere and go in my car?

Thanks,
Pamela who would love company!

I heard the town beach parking area was open for parking this morning.

wonder if there are specific times they open and lock the gate and, if so, if there is signage to that effect.  If anyone on this list goes, could you please check and report back?

Thanks for this additional information,  Marsha.  Remarkable how much in American society is driven by insurance.

As of this morning when I arrived at 730, the gate at the town beach was unlocked and opened and a few skaters had parked there. I was parked there for an hour and a half with no issues

Aha, Jo,  So walking in my 1st pair of skate boots might have contributed to the boot ripping away from its sole? They did last 12+ years, but I hope to never deal with that again!
