Two of us tried skating the Chittenden Reservoir today, but with only one in a dry suit, we didn’t make it very far. The ice has warmed and is down to one or two pokes. About a hundred yards out from the fishing access a ridge has opened up with ¾” ice for about 6’. We didn’t cross. Someone before us did, but we decided to try Lefferts Pond instead. Again the ice was warm, smooth excellent skating with about 1/2” of snow but only one to two pokes. We couldn’t close the loop around, but still had a good skate.
Lastly I tried Gale Meadow Pond in Londonderry Vermont and was able to skate about one third of it on excellent ice. There were dark thin areas that had barely caught with ¾” ice, but other areas made a nice loop.
I doubt any of the places will survive the warming weather, but it was a fun day today.
