Here's the ice on Dead Creek yesterday.  Thick ice, nubbly surface.  80-85% clear of snow.  Unfortunately a very light snowfall last night.

I stopped by the Rt 17 access on the way home. I couldn’t get through in four or five pokes and the surface is nearly perfect. I think it’s worth mentioning that this water flows and based on the half dozen or more trips I’ve done on dead creek, there will be plenty of sketchy ice. The thin snow cover likely didn’t change much except diminish the ability to see visual cues.

Yes, the only time I fell through the ice was on Dead Creek north of rt 17 when I skated across an unseen water flow/thin ice at a narrow neck.

Same here.  My only true plur (swim), such as it was in waist deep water, was in Dead Creek some years ago.

That said, just back from a really nice skate there, great conditions.  I came in on the Slang Road off Panton road in Panton. Should be great everywhere on D.C. No shoreline water to cross. Very fine coating of snow over milky ice.
Keep dry!

I second this report!  3 of us headed out from West Road yesterday for a great skate all the way to route 17.  The dusting of snow let us see the abundant wildlife activity this time of year.   Skating conditions were ideal with a very light wind and overcast skies.  Areas of concern were still visible under the light snow and in some cases easier to see due to the wet snow on top.  Highlights included seeing the story of the birds of prey making catches on this ice (lovely wing prints), the aforementioned deer carcass,  a dead beaver, lovely bluebirds along the side creeks, and very interesting ice patterns of what we hypothesize to be the circular patterns of a mouse with a brain parasite who circled until it became someone's meal.

Overall a lovely skate!  Thanks for sharing this gem!
