Hi friends,

Last winter, a small group of experienced skaters from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York came together to begin creating a suite of educational materials, with the goal of:

  • Offering a set of introductory guides to welcome newcomers to the sport

  • Developing an ice reading and ice safety training curriculum

  • Consolidating all published materials in a single easily-accessible location: https://nordicskaters.squarespace.com

  • Growing the knowledge base and the enthusiasm for this sport we all love

Attached are our first two products, a one-page ‘Intro to Nordic Skating’ fact sheet and a longer Getting Started on Wild Ice manual.

Stay tuned for more content as the season progresses. We are eager to receive feedback, so feel free to email us at nordi...@gmail.com or through the website https://nordicskaters.squarespace.com.

Here’s to a wonderful skating season!

Excellent!  An impressive compilation of information. Nice to see that my initiative in 2008 contributed to something bigger and better.

Allow me a suggestion. In the Netherlands skaters inform each other about local conditions via a Google Map that can edited by anyone. .

Hi Kitty,

Wow, what a great effort! Thank you and the group for putting this all together!

If you want to include the videos I took last year of Evan Perkin's Ice Safety and Ice Reading class, please feel free to include this link in your list of resources, https://photos.app.goo.gl/WjFs7PD8hZkDkZkz7, or post the link to them on your nordicskaters.squarespace.com website. Ideally, I would like to find a home for these videos other than on my personal Google account so that they can reach a wider audience. Feel free to download the videos and post them on your nordicskaters website if you want. I think it would be a great place for them.

Hope to see you out there soon!

Wow, A lot of hard work by NNSW!
Hats off to you all !
Just went through the whole site and it is full of excellent information.
(I love that it ‘ended’ with Thoreau.)
Respectfully,

This is a terrific resource and I am posting on our Minnesota Nordic and Wild Ice skaters FB page.  With this winter slow on snow we have had a surge of folks lake skating, at least 800 joining our FB group and an equal (and not always the same people) joining the Cook Co Lake Skaters FB page (the NE Arrowhead region of Minnesota, home to BWCAW).

Now that we’re heading into the busy time of year for this Nordic skating listserv, and starting to see some early season reports, I wanted to re-post the safety resources that our NE Nordic Skating Workgroup put together last year for folks who are new to Nordic skating or just need a refresher on safety and best practices.
Before you get out on your skates this winter, this is a good time to check your gear and review the safety resources.
