One other aspect of great game design is the idea of total immersion.
A game does not feel "complete" unless its graphics, menu styles,
animation, physics, and music are all congruent. For example, you may
have realistic feel to a game, and realism is expressed to the point
where one shot will kill you and so on, but the jump button lets you
jump like you're on the moon. Also, music is far underrated in game
design in my opinion. All of these things need to work together, and
allow gameplay to be based on more than just what you see. This will
ultimately make an okay game a great game.

Not just music, but sound in general. Try playing Call of Duty 4 with
the sound muted and see how much fun it is.
And remember, realism does not always equal fun.

I posted an article about the current state of video game audio in the
interesting news thread. Might be an interesting thing to read.

Okay, I have an idea. According to http://imaginecup.com/
CompetitionsContent/MDG.aspx, there are several key problems. My
idea is that we have an almost paper look to a game. The foreground
would be the current level, while the background would consist of a
small, animated look into the upcoming levels (off in the distance).
The first level would be broken down into smaller, sub-levels. There
would be different challenges in each sub-level. For instance, the
first might be you are flying a helicopter-like device and have to
airlift food to starving children. The goal would be to make the game
cute, while still retaining the significance of the topics it covers.
