Hello VT Students,
I hope the first two weeks of the semester went smoothly! Everyone from the ISA team is very proud of you all, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for all of you.
That being said, we feel that it is imperative to inform our community of potential scam alerts and threats that have already been directed toward members of our list server. We strive to keep you all safe, informed, and filled with the knowledge to have a safe journey here at Virginia Tech.
The scams that students have been victim to range from scam job calls, faulty tax and insurance claims, and fake emails from Bitcoin and Paypal, with the scammers even going as far as mailing in inaccurate documentation claiming to be from the Commonwealth of Virginia.
While we know it is impossible to completely steer clear of scammers and their detrimental endeavors, we do have some general tips to stay safe, so please feel free to share this with your peers.
For one, ensure that all sensitive information (i.e. passwords to bank accounts, Social Security numbers, addresses, and phone numbers), are all kept private, and if needed, stored in a safe place. Nobody should have access to your personal information, no matter what the case may be.
In the advanced society we live in, there are also many active measures we can take in the form of apps. Popular apps to prevent scammers from accessing your info include T-Mobile Scam Shield, Anti Scam, and Sprint Call Screener. All of these apps are free and add an extra layer of protection against your personal information.
Attached to this email are just a few of the examples listed above entailing the ways scammers have targeted our fellow students. Please take a look at them and become familiar with the potential dangers you may encounter.
Stay safe fellow ISA Hokies! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at any time!
