Subject: The Sustainable Food Core Student Garden Needs Your Help!
To:
NRRSO...@listserv.vt.edu Calling all able Volunteers!
This spring/summer the Sustainable Food Core (SFC) is spearheading an
effort to create and perpetuate a student run garden located behind
the Smithfield Plantation. This has long been a goal of the SFC and is
finally becoming a reality through a partnership with faculty experts
and the new Civic Agriculture and Food Systems Minor. We are committed
to demonstrating how a tired piece of land can be transformed through
sound agricultural practices and the dedication of passionate
volunteers, which is why we are contacting you! The growing season is
well underway, but there is still much work to be done at the garden.
This is a great opportunity for you and members of your organization to get
hands on experience with gardening, learn from local experts, and give
back to the community (as well as get some delicious produce in return
for help at the garden)!
Most weeks this summer, weather depending, we meet at the garden
starting around 4:00 pm on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons for
volunteer "work days" and would love to see more people come out! We
usually work until about 7 o'clock so even if you can only make it for
an hour or so there will be someone at the garden from 4 until 7.
It's a great time to take a break from summer school or your regular
work
schedule and work with your hands while meeting new friends. Once more
produce starts to come in we would love to incorporate potlucks or
picnics into our workdays to reward ourselves for our time in the
garden and we'd love to have you join us!
We are hoping to have an outstanding first season in order to impress
upon faculty and sponsors that a student garden is a valuable asset
for the University and Blacksburg Community, so please join us in this
endeavor!
