Virginia Tech “Green Effect”:  Home Football Game, Partnership + Fund

Internship Description and Specific Duties

The purpose of this project is twofold and has two major components – a “Green Effect” t-shirt and a near zero waste home football game during the fall 2011 season.  Because of the size of this project, there will be a 10 person team.  Our chosen t-shirt vendor, SustainU, will be working with us to gain national attention for this program.

“Green Effect” Near-Zero Waste Home Football Game:  Home Hokie sporting events generate tremendous amounts of trash and recycling materials.  This part of the project will focus on conducting a full assessment of game day operations, applying the best practices on game day programs that the spring 2011 intern team compiled, and then developing a logistical framework and implementation plan for a near-zero waste (90% diversion rate) home football game.  This game will take place during the fall 2011 season.  There are several examples across this nation that proves that it is possible, especially at Colorado University at Boulder.  Interns will be working closely with the Athletics Department and Facilities Services here on campus.

“Green Effect” T-Shirt Fund Generating Program:  Similar to the successful SGA orange and maroon effect campaigns, a “Green Effect” t-shirt will be developed and sold to generate funds for sustainability initiatives on campus.  It will be worn during the near-zero waste football game to create a comprehensive Virginia Tech “Green Effect” campaign.  A partnership has been formed between the Office of Energy and Sustainability, Virginia Tech Services (the bookstores), Student Government Association, Graduate Student Assembly, the Environmental Coalition, and SustainU to work on this program.  Interns will be responsible for the development and management of this program, with minimal support of program partners.

Desired Applicants and Qualifications

Interns must be hard working, flexible, and able to thrive in a collaborative team-oriented environment.  A passion for or strong interest in sustainability issues is recommended.  To be able to provide an interdisciplinary academic experience, OES is seeking applicants with academic or professional experience in one or more of the following fields:

·         Event Planning

·         Environmental Planning

·         Industrial Systems Engineering

·         Green Engineering

·         Environmental Science

Game Day Best Practices Guide for Colleges and Universities:  The team will continue the work of the spring 2011 team by organizing all of the research already gathered into a packet and guide for institutions of higher education.  This packet will include a list of best practices in all of the areas of game day operations, a how-to-guide on getting started with implementing a game day program, and a couple of other small items to help universities improve their programs.

Office of Energy and Sustainability and US EPA Partnership Establishment:  The team will work with an already established contact in the Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery to form a partnership between this internship program and their office.  The partnership will enable one team from each cohort of interns to work on a research based project for the US EPA.
