Hello!
Exciting news-- the Chesapeake Climate Action Network is launching a new campaign to bring offshore wind development to our state! Offshore wind power is one of the commonwealth's best ways of fighting global warming and toxic pollution while creating good, local jobs and boosting our economy. We could get a huge share of our energy from ocean breezes in just a few short years. But we've got to work to make it happen.
Tomorrow we're launching our campaign with a press conference to announce the dozens of businesses and organizations that have already signed on to pledge their support for offshore wind energy.
Then this Wednesday we're holding a special youth call to talk about how young people across the state can get involved.
Join us on Wednesday at 9pm for a policy update from Chelsea Harnish, CCAN's Virginia Policy Coordinator and offshore wind expert, followed by a chat about how we can take action.
Call information:
Dial (712) 775-7300
Wait to be prompted, then Enter Passcode: 668976#
Please RSVP for the call!
How can you get you involved?
1. Have your student group, local organization or favorite local business sign the support letter. We're working to gather hundreds of them over the summer- add your support today.
2. Be a Fellow. I got started at CCAN as a Fellow and this summer we have two fellowship posititions open in Virginia (one in our Takoma Park office and one in Richmond. The position requires a commitment of at least 30 hours a week and runs for 10 weeks, from roughly June through August. This fellowship is a perfect opportunity to refine your organizing skills, especially if you are looking to organize for a living. Find out more information about applying for a CCAN Fellowship here.
3. Can't do 30 hours per week but want to stay involved over the summer? Volunteer! The summer is full of festivals and concerts where CCAN will be gathering support for offshore wind. Whether you are in Hampton Roads, Northern Virginia, Richmond or elsewhere, we need your help! Sign up to volunteer on this RSVP page.
4. And, of course: Come to Energize Virginia : A Citizen's Summit on Offshore Wind Power on June 4. Register NOW to get the student rate and don't miss out on speakers including State Senator Donald McEachin, Vanessa Pierce, Deputy Director of Sierra Club's National Beyond Coal Campaign, and CCAN's own Executive Director, Mike Tidwell!
But most importantly get on our call Wednesday to hear more! RSVP here!
Keeping the Power Shift going,
~Kat
