Hello all,

It has been a while since I have purchased hardware for myself and I am admittedly biased toward nvidia because of driver support.  I need to purchase some mini-PC units for a project and noticed a lot of AMD Ryzen systems at attractive prices.

Is anyone running VSG on Linux on AMD Ryzen hardware and are you finding good driver support?

Thanks,

-don

I've been really happy with integrated GPUs on AMD Ryzen for daily-driver VSG work, on both Windows and Linux. In 2023 I did almost all my work on a laptop with Renoir graphics, and my current personal machine is a Geekom A8 mini-PC, probably similar to what you are contemplating. The GPU is advertised as "Phoenix3". AMD Vulkan support is really good.

Hi Don,

I've just built a new machine with an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X and I'm currently only using integrated graphics. I built and ran my VSG application under Linux just half an hour ago. It all works and renders moderately complex scenes at 60fps. When the scene includes a tiled lidar surface with high resolution textures it starts to drop the frame rate, especially if they are transparent. Tipping the elevation edge on so that there are way too many transparent primitives drops the frame rate to around 2fps, but this also affects the frame rate on a 3070Ti machine (think I need to solve that issue).

Regards,
Roland

Seems we've forgotten that we now have a forum on github :-)

My experience with AMD CPU with integrated with GPU was really good until changes in the kernel drivers last year screwed up handling of displays for AMDs.  Black screens ensued when I upgraded from Kubuntu 22.04 to 24.04, there are fixes by required switching off graphics drivers.

I built a new machine last year with ADM8700G which has really impressive performance and features for CPU with integrated GPU, but... because of the driver issues had to drop in a dedicated NVidia card to get my display to play nice with Kubuntu 24.04.  I haven't tried again this year to see if the issues have been resolved, as others are reporting success it might be just  Ubuntu/Kubuntu issue or that the recent drivers have addressed the issues.

Best of luck with the wee machine.
Robert.
