I guessed the premise from the first episode because none of the characters used appropriate dialogue or displayed the correct social conventions. They acted like 21st century characters at a costume party.

1899 also likes to tease and hide with its many mysteries and red herrings. Every time you come close to figuring out something, it throws a curveball. Post the fifth episode, it does get tiring when the larger narrative compels you to wait for some more time to see the bigger picture. In fact, despite a lot happening over the episodes, the larger narrative moves so slowly, akin to the illusion of a ship moving on open waters.

Like in the case of Dark, the sound design, music, colour grading, cinematography, and production design all come together quite well to enhance storytelling. Though perhaps a little too intense for its own good, 1899 still offers more than one can bargain for.

1899 is a suspenseful new offering on Netflix from German director Baran bo Odar, who created and directed Dark also on the streaming service. Dark ran for three seasons and was considered a critical success in almost every aspect of the series.

1899 also has a ton of different characters to keep straight. There are no less than 15 important characters to follow, perhaps, even more, depending on just who you count as important. Each of these people has a complicated backstory that is revealed a little at a time as the story progresses.

One of the really interesting (for me) but potentially off-putting (for some) aspects is the huge variety of languages spoken during 1899. I may not be 100% correct but I believe that English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese are all spoken.

No one on board the Kerberos is quite who they seem, and when their paths cross with another passenger ship that was thought to be lost, the voyage begins to turn into a nightmare for everyone involved. Make sure you don't miss an episode of this cliffhanger-filled drama with our guide to every episode of 1899.

Wherever you are in the world, you'll need a Netflix account to catch the new season of 1899. All episodes started streaming on the same day, so you can binge-watch to your heart's content (or savor each episode on your own schedule).

1899's cancellation might have something to do with costs (just take a peek at Netflix's behind-the-scenes special Making 1899 for a look at all that tech, including groundbreaking LED sets). The streaming service has been pinching pennies since 2019 when price hikes saw subscribers bailing by the bucketload. Netflix currently appears to be back on track, spending $17 billion on content in 2022.

The Army established Fort Robinson near the source of the White River on the Pine Ridge in northwestern Nebraska in 1874. The post saw active service in the best known war between the United States and Plains Natives, the Sioux War of 1876, and was the site of the death of Crazy Horse. It also witnessed the tragic Cheyenne outbreak of January 1878, the bloodiest episode in the post's history. This book, the first of a projected two-volume study, covers these events and the next two decades, during which the United States emerged as an imperial power.

The files in series 2 date from 1893 to 1899 and represent 0.25 linear feet. This series documents expenses related to real estate in New York City owned by the Goelets. Most properties are listed by address. The files include some bills to Ogden that were paid posthumously by business managers and some invoices from Department of Water Supply, Consolidated Gas Co., and the city of New York. While it shows a representative picture of their real estate investments, this series does not describe the family's entire holdings.

APPRAISER:
It is in fact a woodblock, you're absolutely right. It's huge. This is a woodblock that was made in nine different blocks. I mean there's no way you could carve a thing this big. So it's nine sheets. Each sheet would be about this kind of size, and he carved it, and then they printed it on separate sheets of paper, and then the papers were mounted on this linen. You can see the linen here. And it was mounted to that and then hung on this. It's by W.-- and that's William-- Strang, and it was done in 1899. It was actually commissioned from Strang by the Art for Schools Association. And it was an association, a British association, that provided prints, some that went into schools, but they also sold prints that were then used to raise money for schools. It is done in the Arts and Crafts style. Now, condition is an issue, obviously. And the reason you got it for $15, I think, is because most people looked at it and said, "Great image, but what am I going to do with that?" You can fix it up, it would be expensive, and then you would have a very valuable print once you fix it up. So really to determine what a reasonable value is, you subtract your cost of restoration from what it'd be worth when it's fixed up. So I think a dealer could sell this in a retail environment for about $1,500. And I'm basing that on the fact that it would probably cost you about $1,500 to fix it up. And when you fix it up, you would have a print that would be worth at least $3,000, possibly as much as $4,000. I mean one of the concerns is can you fill this in so it looks good and how stable it'd be, but I think you could make it look really nice.
