Get the jump on Santa at a
SOUTH AFRICAN DANCE PARTY with
the UMOJA 5-STAR BAND and AMABUTHO MARIMBA.
The musicians of both bands perform in the hit musical Umoja, which is
currently running at the Vogue Theatre. Monday is their night off, and
on DECEMBER 17 they're heading to East Vancouver to celebrate the
season.
The Umoja 5 Star Band - sax, guitar, bass, keyboards, kit-drum - play
and mix a range of popular styles in South Africa - soul, pop, funk,
reggae, jazz, and above all mbaqanga, township-jive, the irresistible
beat of Soweto (think Paul Simon's classic Graceland album). The core
quintet has added four female singers and dancers to send the music
into overdrive.
We defy your feet to resist the pull of this 9-piece outfit! The
Umoja 5 Star Band will play two sets, and is preceded by Amabutho
Marimba, a quintet of young Zulu performers.
The evening will begin and end with genial DJ Nils from Beats Without
Borders, criss-crossing the African continent, spinning discs and
keeping the thermostat on high.
December is our midwinter - but it's midsummer in South Africa with
the sun at zenith. Feel that southern heat on
