Cool idea, simple and effective. Gonna have to try it myself when I get my Rift. It looks like it actually could bring some added value to the Rift.

Maybe Palmer will see this and add this to the consumer version? :)

Yeah, interesting mod. I still have not received my Rift, however I though that you had to put the googles the shortest possible from your eyes, thus I don't know how "blocked" we are by the edges.
And the latency seems also important to me, specially in cases where colors vary a lot in the 3d scene...

Wait and see: it's arduino based and fairly easy to reproduce...

He knows about it, he even told me that he was playing around with something similar before.

However that doesn't mean that the final Rift version will or will not have it - I have no info about that. There are certain challenges how to make something like this work - it needs explicit support in the software to actually drive the LEDs, so integrating it is not trivial.

Jan

The latency is not a huge deal - you are seeing that only by the very corners of your peripheral vision, so even relatively slow serial connection that Arduino uses is sufficient - the "bandwidth" of the human head movement is very low compared to the USB bandwidth. It is only a few LEDs, each needs 3 values to define the colour updated every once in a while (the PWM is done in hardware on board).

Jan
