LITE-Africa's VPs Program Updates
LITE-Africa commences a training program on VPs for Security
Forces (Police and Military) CSOs and Community Vigilantes in the Niger Delta.
With funding from National Endowment for Democracy (NED), LITE
Africa is implementing a one-year human rights project targeting security
sector forces, community vigilantes, and CSOs in the Niger Delta region. This
intervention seeks to incorporate a human rights perspective in the current
quest for national security by providing members of the JTF with a
comprehensive understanding of both their rights and responsibilities as they
relate to human rights. This training witnessed the participation of
members of the Military Joint Task Force (JTF), the police and community
vigilantes from oil producing communities. The participants are expected
to be introduced to sessions on Human Rights, Voluntary Principles, relevant
local and international Human Rights treaties, constitutional provisions on
Human Rights to enable them to perform their duties, while respecting human
dignity. A total of 30 participants are expected be certified as
Human Rights trainers at the end of the training and they are expected to share
what they have learned with their colleagues and community members. One of the
outcomes of this project is to establish a Human Rights Desk across three law
enforcement commands- 31 Battalion, Effurun Barracks, Police Area Command,
Warri and Divisional Police Headquarters in Koko, Warri North LGA.
