Simple problem this - stock Symbian differentiates between 3G and 3.5G
(3.5G denotes for me that data is actually being transferred).

vHome only shows 3G when I open a data connection. it would be useful
if it would show when 3.5G data is taking place so I know my data
connection is actually working and not just hanging on 3G doing
nothing, as it often does.. damn Vodafone.

I think 3.5G is HSDPA and 3G is HSUPA

I'm affraid you're wrong.
HSDPA stands for High Speed Downlink Packet Access, and HSUPA stands
for High Speed Uplink Packet Access.

Both abbreviations relate to 3.5G.
3G is just a lower transfer rate. It depends on the network
infrastructure and I think it would be good to know we are in the
range of faster connection.

It does show 3G and 3.5G connections. It even shower E and G for EDGE
and GPRS speeds. Are you sure your in a location with 3.5G network
infrastructure?
