Read another fascinating book, "The pursuit of excellence - The uncommon behaviours of the world's most productive achievers" by Ryan Hawk. Here are my key takeaways. Hawk interviewed hundreds of world-renowned experts and entrepreneurs to determine which habits and practices are most effective, and he boiled these down to three essential habits.

It is important to know the distinction between transactional vs. transformational relationship. Your focus should be in building transformational relationship. People in transformational relationships challenge each other to push their boundaries and reach new heights of excellence.

I believe many of us are called to rise to our innate excellence in a certain field. Greeks like Aristotle called that innate excellence arete. The virtue of excellence. The virtue of cultivating your talents, crafts, abilities to fulfill your greatest potential and purpose.

Confusion exists about the construct of perfectionism, considered to consist of perfectionistic strivings (PS) and perfectionistic concerns (PC). Recent theory suggests that pursuit of excellence is related to PS but differentiated by having a more positive impact. To test this hypothesis, we used a meta-analytic analysis to examine the associations between different measures of perfectionism and academic achievement. Correlations between academic measures (performance, academic burnout and stress, test anxiety, procrastination, self-efficacy, engagement, satisfaction, adjustment, hardiness, learning strategies) and subscales of the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, Hewitt Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, Almost Perfect Scale-Revised, and Child and Adolescent Perfectionism Scale were investigated in students (Mage = 19.31, SD = 4.26). A systematic literature search yielded 67 studies (378 effect sizes). Subscales relating to standards (High Standards, Personal Standards, Self-Oriented Perfectionism) were positively related to academic performance and helpful academic outcomes. Only High Standards, which has a focus on striving for excellence, had negative associations with unhelpful academic outcomes. Two of the four subscales that measured PC (Discrepancy, Doubts about Actions) were negatively related to academic performance, and Discrepancy shared a negative association with helpful academic outcomes. All PC subscales were positively associated with unhelpful academic outcomes. As such, PC are maladaptive for successful learning and a distinction between PS and healthy pursuit of excellence is worth further exploration. The beautiful thing about embedding this mindset into your life is that you start to see better results in everything you do. This excellence level becomes your new standard! Your work becomes better, the chores become less mundane, and you start feeling a better sense of accomplishment.

Excellence is a mindset rather than an outcome. After all, anyone can produce excellent content, design excellent graphics, or deliver excellent results on an ad campaign, but not everyone has the drive and determination to work toward excellence in everything they do. The reality is that the pursuit of excellence is relentless; there are always ways you can expand your frame of mind, enhance your skills, or motivate the people around you to work harder and reach higher goals. And the people who are truly excellent are the ones that work tirelessly to better themselves and each other every day.

For me, the pursuit of excellence means focusing on 1% gains. It is a relentless focus on small improvements that add up to big wins. For SEO, achieving position #1 in search results depends upon tiny factors. For email marketing, one word in a subject line can make or break a campaign. Growth marketing is all about aiming for that 1%.

The pursuit of excellence is about how you make people feel. Exceeding expectations, whether it be a co-worker, a boss, or a client. Treating people in such a way that makes an impact. Treating them better than they expect to be treated. Lastly, creating lasting relationships that are built on trust and respect. That is how I view the pursuit of excellence.

Excellence, to me, is both a goal to strive for and a state of mind. Pursuing excellence allows you to find inspiration from others along the way, but a mindset seeking excellence fosters innovation and pushes your work to the next level.

The pursuit of excellence expands with every achievement accomplished down the road. Teamwork, individual goals, sharing knowledge, and envisioning the end product encompass the meaning of excellence altogether.

For me, The Pursuit of Excellence means constantly challenging ourselves to be the best we can be. Whether that means improving or changing a process, learning a new industry trend, or developing a new concept. With this mindset, we constantly focus on growing, improving, and achieving our highest potential. When we all work together in this pursuit, our clients and co-workers see positive results that separate us from the masses.

A statement I always make as a reminder to both you and me is "the pursuit of excellence isn't a moment in time, it is a life long journey". This is an important mindset to adopt. Think about elite level sports stars or elite level SF and SOF operators who were once at the pinnacle of their game, now, they're overweight, unmotivated and living on the victory's of yesterday.

When I was growing up, I was committed to excellence in sports. I spent much of my life on the field. But when the promise of a future in sports went away, I began to explore excellence in other areas of life.

In my first job in sales, I worked hard to get better at it. I interviewed the top performers in my division, implemented their advice, and worked to become one of the most productive sales professionals at my company. I was pursuing excellence. The result was not only high performance in my career, but a lifelong curiosity in excellence: what it is and how to cultivate it.

In Part III, Ryan Hawk wraps up The Pursuit of Excellence by reminding us that excellence is a lifelong commitment that takes time. Excellence is slow, destruction is fast. To truly be excellent, be prepared to put in the reps consistently for years.

6. The effectiveness of your attempts to chase excellence will be impacted by the health of the relationships you build along the way. Foster healthy relationships through sharing a group meal and diving into deeper questions.

The case studies in this guide illustrate that applying the principles of performance excellence to these areas can produce substantial patient and operational value and help hospitals deliver care that meets the 6 IOM aims. By demonstrating specific actions and results, hospitals can share measurable progress and stories of improvement with key stakeholders, including their patients, their communities, payers, regulators and others. The AHA pledges to help all hospital leaders do that.
