Alright, so I was bold enough to try to upgrade from Mac OS X Lion to OS X Mavericks, after making the necessary backups of course. Actually it worked out fine for all other software, only VoSeq I haven't been able to get functioning again (yet).

Several things have changed in Mavericks with regard to website sharing. There is no longer an option of "web sharing" under System Preferences: Sharing. The url I used to use to approach voseq no longer worked (something like 1.27.0 etc). The new url that does work looks like: http://localmachinename/~shortusername/index.html

However, this only worked after I moved the whole contents of the folder /Sites/Voseq up to /Sites. When I tried to connect to it within /Sites/Voseq it just opened the php file as a text file in safari, even though the php.conf settings state that the machine should open .php files as php, not as text. Nonetheless, moving all the folder contents to /Sites worked and now I could access the voseq inlog page at http://localmachinename/~shortusername/index.html

Logging in however, I get the short but clear message: "Unable to connect MySQL". First I thought the update may have removed my mysql installation so I reinstalled a newer version (but later I found that the old installation was probably still there. No change in the problem though - each time I try to connect or start the mysql database I had, it asks me for a password and leaving the field empty, or using my previous password does not work. I've tried all google-suggested lines for changing the root password access but it doesnt work. Also the suggested line in the voseq manual doesn't work. When looking at it with mysql workbench I can see my localhost connection and the mysqld server, but it asks me for a password when I try to connect to it.

Can anyone help me out here? I somehow need to connect to my mysql instance, and I'm not really sure if it's even running.

Many thanks in advance!

Camiel

Update (and I apologize for the lengthy texts)

Should also note that I discovered that endnote versions pre X7.01 do not work with Mavericks.. probably switching to Papers. But here sticking to the VoSeq related issues:

I realized that I probably just didn't know my password anymore, so I changed it through this manual: http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/recover-mysql-root-password.html and yes, now I can connect to mysqld in mysql workbench. My whole database appears to be empty though, or not recognized. Getting error code 1049 unknown database 'my_db'. On the webpage I now get this error: Unable to select database; You might need to check your conf.php file

As far as I can tell my conf.php file is fine, but since I was able to finally log-in through mysql workbench and use the import function to load my backup sql file and yes, my database was restored. I can access it fully through the mysql workbench. When I try to log in on the voseq login page however, it redirects me to login-failed.php page. Figuring that out is the next step I guess. Maybe I'm not using the correct password - is there any way to retrieve it? When I try to look at it in the mysql workbench voseq_members table it shows what looks like an encryption.

Success! Tobias explained to me how to reset the password (I won't mention that here for security reasons) and the new password worked.

I'm still not quite sure how everything ended up with different passwords than how I left them, I am fairly certain I had the right ones. Doesn't matter though, everything is up and running now.

The system does seem faster with Mavericks, and the battery lasts longer, so it looks like it was worth the effort.

regards,
Camiel
