TheCoyotes had put Ruzicka on waivers Friday after he posted to his Instagram stories a video of himself with a white powder appearing to be cocaine and a credit card on a counter. The team said it would have no further comment at this time.

Ruzicka, 24, was in the second season of a two-year contract worth $1.525 million. He had been with the Coyotes for about a month since they claimed him off waivers from the Calgary Flames on Jan. 25.


Ruzicka is the second NHL player this season to have his contract terminated, following Corey Perry with the Chicago Blackhawks after the team said the veteran winger violated team workplace policy. The NHL Players' Association asked for and was granted an extension of the window for Perry to file a grievance, and he has since joined the Edmonton Oilers.


The NHL has punished players for off-ice conduct such as Ruzicka's in the past. Washington's Evgeny Kuznetsov was suspended three games in 2019 for "inappropriate conduct," less than a month after he was banned from playing for Russia for four years because of a positive test for cocaine.


Most people who use an illicit drug do not go on to develop addiction. A Columbia study in rats helps explain why an early exposure to alcohol can tip the balance and increase a person's vulnerability to developing addiction to cocaine.

A July 11 Instagram video (direct link, archive link) shows President Joe Biden standing on the White House balcony with several other people, including his wife, Jill Biden, and son, Hunter Biden. At one point in the video, Hunter Biden walks behind Jill Biden and appears to touch his nose.


The footage was captured on the Fourth of July while the Bidens watched fireworks on the White House balcony. That was two days after cocaine was found in the White House's West Wing lobby, an area accessible to some members of the public.


Some social media users have speculated Hunter Biden, who has acknowledged past struggles with drug use and addiction, could be responsible for the cocaine found in the White House. The Secret Service did not name any suspects when the investigation of the incident ended due to a lack of adequate physical evidence.

Although craving states are important to both cocaine dependence (CD) and pathological gambling (PG), few studies have directly investigated neurobiological similarities and differences in craving between these disorders. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess brain activity in 103 participants (30 CD, 28 PG, and 45 controls) while they watched videos depicting cocaine, gambling, and sad scenarios to investigate the neural correlates of craving. We observed a three-way urge type video type diagnostic group interaction in self-reported craving, with CD participants reporting strong cocaine cravings to cocaine videos, and PG participants reporting strong gambling urges to gambling videos. Neuroimaging data revealed a diagnostic group video interaction in anterior cingulate cortex/ventromedial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), activating predominantly to cocaine videos in CD participants, and a more dorsal mPFC region that was most strongly activated for cocaine videos in CD participants, gambling videos in PG participants, and sad videos in control participants. Gender diagnosis video interactions identified dorsal mPFC and a region in posterior insula/caudate in which female but not male PG participants showed increased responses to gambling videos. Findings illustrate both similarities and differences in the neural correlates of drug cravings and gambling urges in CD and PG. Future studies should investigate diagnostic- and gender-specific therapies targeting the neural systems implicated in craving/urge states in addictions.


Dopamine (phasic release) is implicated in conditioned responses. Imaging studies in cocaine abusers show decreases in striatal dopamine levels, which we hypothesize may enhance conditioned responses since tonic dopamine levels modulate phasic dopamine release. To test this we assessed the effects of increasing tonic dopamine levels (using oral methylphenidate) on brain activation induced by cocaine-cues in cocaine abusers. Brain metabolism (marker of brain function) was measured with PET and 18FDG in 24 active cocaine abusers tested four times; twice watching a Neutral video (nature scenes) and twice watching a Cocaine-cues video; each video was preceded once by placebo and once by methylphenidate (20 mg). The Cocaine-cues video increased craving to the same extent with placebo (68%) and with methylphenidate (64%). In contrast, SPM analysis of metabolic images revealed that differences between Neutral versus Cocaine-cues conditions were greater with placebo than methylphenidate; whereas with placebo the Cocaine-cues decreased metabolism (p

To test this hypothesis we assessed the effects of raising tonic DA levels by giving a low dose of oral MP (20 mg) [22] on the regional brain metabolic activation induced by cocaine-cues in cocaine abusers. We used Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and 2-deoxy-2[18F]fluoro-D-glucose (18FDG) to measure brain glucose metabolism (marker of brain function) [23] in 24 active cocaine abusers. Subjects were tested on four different days each under a different condition; twice while watching a neutral video (nature scenes), once with placebo and once with MP (20 mg po), and twice while watching a video of cocaine-cues (repeating scenes of people taking cocaine), once with placebo and once with MP. The cocaine-cues video used was one we had previously shown to induce significant increases in striatal DA, which was an effect associated with increases in drug craving in cocaine abusers [14]. We chose a dose of MP (20 mg oral), which we had previously shown induced significant increases in striatal DA in cocaine abusers but that did not elicit drug craving nor was it perceived as reinforcing [16]. Cocaine craving was measured using a brief version of the Cocaine Craving Questionnaire (CCQ) that evaluates current cocaine craving [24].


We hypothesized that MP by increasing tonic DA levels would dampen phasic DA firing triggered by conditioned cues and thus the activation pattern elicited by cocaine-cues would be attenuated when MP was given as compared to when placebo was given. We also hypothesized that this would be associated with reduced craving.


The craving measures (CCQ and self-reports) increased significantly with the Cocaine-cues exposure for both conditions (placebo or MP). Whole brain absolute metabolic measures corresponded for Neutral with PL to 34.95 mol/100 g/min, for Neutral with MP to 36.15 mol/100 g/min, for Cocaine-cues with PL to 35.05 mol/100 g/min and for Cocaine-cues with MP to 35.95 mol/100 g/min and the measures did not differ between conditions. The SPM analysis also showed no differences between conditions for the absolute metabolic images.


SPM comparisons for the normalized metabolic measures showed significant decreases in relative metabolism for the Cocaine-cues video when compared with the Neutral-video that were more extensive with Placebo than with MP. When Placebo was given decreases were significant in left limbic regions (lateral orbitofrontal cortex (OFC)/anterior insula (BA 47 and BA 11), accumbens, posterior insula) and right parahippocampal gyrus (BA 36 and 37), and in auditory (left BA 22 and left and right BA 42) and visual areas (left lingual gyrus) (Figure 1 and Table 3 for location of areas). In contrast when MP was given the only significant differences were in the right visual (inferior BA 18) and right auditory (BA 42) regions (Figure 1, Table 3 shows location of areas).


To control for potential findings driven by the effects of MP in the Neutral video we also compared the effects of MP with those of Placebo. The SPM analysis revealed significant decreases for both video conditions in precentral gyrus (BA 6) and with the Neutral video additional decreases in posterior cingulate (BA 30), superior temporal and postcentral gyrus (Figure 2, Table 4).


The SPM analysis of the interaction effect between video and drug condition showed that the decreases with the Cocaine-cues were attenuated when MP was given when compared to placebo. Specifically the decreases when the cocaine-cues were given with placebo versus when given with MP were significantly greater in the right and left lingual gyrus, left hippocampal gyrus, left accumbens/BA 25 region and left lateral OFC (BA 47) (Figure 3, and Table 5 for location of areas).
