Two movies in one, the first is a relatively breezy courtroom drama about a public defender played by Peter Weller, who goes all in on the case of a drug dealer who killed a crooked cop in self defense all the while falling back in love with an old flame who is the ADA, the other is high-80s action with Sam Elliot as a Texas shitkicker who also an undercover narc. This movie luxuriates in the depravity of crack-era New York City. Multiple scenes of crack orgies, crack parties, women getting turned out for crack, dirty cops, and crack dealing. Its gritty portrayal of 80s NYC, with all real locations, is slightly undercut by scenes where Elliot and Weller do shootouts on motorcycles and Elliot takes down a plane by shooting the engines from the landing gear and it narrowly misses the Twin Towers. High-test 80s shit. A must see.

An undercover cop is killed. A drug dealer is arrested for the crime. However, the drug dealer says it's self-defense. Will anyone believe him? Peter Weller stars as the public defender assigned to the case. Sam Elliott is the honest maverick cop with his own unique style of justice. When the Shakedown happens; will you be ready?

When Sam Elliott talks, I listen. He's the perfect spokesman for "Macho Manly Badass Motherfuckers." His voice, hairstyle and facial hair, make the ultimate triple-threat package. He owns every scene in Shakedown. His way with roller coasters, fast cars, handguns, toothbrushes and airplanes, can't be beat. He's the main reason you watch this flick.

foamy, chromatic 80s banger that's shaking and baking like a chef. quite a lot of sexy shots of the NYC smut of that decade, that is so lovely to watch on gentrified screens nowadays. the buddy comedy is a little self-defeating but Sam Elliott is beasting around like he's supposed to, the score drives us to synthie heaven and the ending is so bonkers, you gotta love it.

like few great genre films, it manages to be many things at once: legal thriller, buddy movie, time capsule of period nyc grit, endorsement of blue jeans, anti-cop, proof that stunt performers deserve oscars

Shakedown opens with Red Hot Chili Peppers blaring from a boombox, but don't hold that against the movie as a whole. Director James Glickenhaus otherwise plays the right notes here, delivering a fun, formulaic late '80s police thriller/buddy flick that is very much of its time but in the best ways possible.

At one point in this movie, a judge sets a defendant's bail at a million dollars. The defendant snaps his fingers, and two men walk up to the bench with a briefcase full of $50 and $100 bills. Presumably, the money is just handed directly to the judge because within moments, the defendant is walking toward the exit with a honey on each arm. Just delightful.

I really liked this, a total surprise. It moves at a perfect pace and has some wild car crashes and stunt work. Sam Elliott and Peter Weller are all-timer character actors, and they have some great buddy chemistry here. I wish they spent more time together in the film. The vibe is very Lethal Weapon with a dash of courtroom drama. Nice little '80s gem here.

James Glickenhaus is the master of the pepper; peppering simple and two-dimensional scripts with action beats that wow and entertain with creativity. Not just content with chucking in shootouts or car chases, Glickenhaus sprinkles some extra flavour in to make it stand out.
