God's power grid -- could it be the sun?
I'm interested to know whether the Google Group recipients would
consider raising 8000-10000 to send a couple of solar panels and a
battery for storage to the Burundi team.
With the kind of sun they get at the equator, one good solar panel can
provide 10-12 hours of storage and 1.5Kw hours of power. That's
15-100 watt lightbulbs for one hour. It would also mean a power drill
for a couple of hours of use. Each panel and battery combo costs
1000. Shipping for 150 lbs worth of solar panels is 3000. So it
might cost 8000 to buy and send two units. (Power drilling for half a
day!) One may also have to deal with duty on the items sent. I'm
sure the Burundi government might want the full cost of the item in
duty, but I don't know the particulars of that.
Gerald Bates and I had an interesting conversation today about whether
a new sub-station or some combination of alternative energy sources
(wind and solar) could do the trick. Please pray for wisdom as we try
all the avenues available to us to get power to the team. I'm routing
for alternative energy!
