Questions about building an RCP client/server app

I've been working on a network client app for some time and haven't
been pleased with how I've been doing the network communication, so I
was planning on re-working it, using extasys ( http://code.google.com/p/extasys/
) the dirty work.

Architecturally, what's the recommended way of implementing a
persistent service such as this?
