Hi all!

I am playing around with the ShowVoc Admin Dashboard to customization the visualization of a specific datasets. and i have a couple of questions.

1)  is it possible hide datatypes, having something simlar to the "Show datatype badge" available in the personal configuration? I was expecting to find it in tab Resource view (from "Edit settings" ), but  apparently I can only chose to show/hide language tags, not the datatype.

 2)  again in tab "Resource view", Render predicate labels. I would like to edit labels of properties coming from an ontology imported in the project, but those properties do not show up (the resource does not appear in the list of vocabularies to select).

3)  in tab "Visible dataset tabs". I select Sparql, Download Tools but only Sparql, Download appear (actually Tools does not seem to be part of the available tabs anyway). See screnshoots below.

Thank you!
Caterina

Dear Caterina,

replies here below:

  1. You are right, a default configuration is missing (I guess you are talking about setting a project default for the project user preference that applies to all users of that project right?). Unfortunately, there is not, currently, something like the Settings Manager of VB which, in lack of any UI for setting the defaults of any setting, provides a basic, automatically produced, UI, for all settings in the system. The porting requires some non-trivial effort (and, indeed, it would be great to extend it to all scopes, as now this is limited also in VB) and, until now, this has not been a priority for any funder. So, defaults need to be provided on a per-setting level explicitly in the UI and this one simply was overlooked.
  2. Have you checked whether the imported ontology is actually missing even if owl:imported? You can check it in many ways,e.g. if you don’t see its classes/properties in the class/prop tabs, then it is missing. Indeed, upon loading some dataset, ShowVoc checks for the imports and tries to import them automatically. Unfortunately, the Linked Open Datasets on the web are not always so properly made available ;-) In ShowVoc there is no imports management, as in theory SV should not cover any editing aspect. Indeed, having a imports manager as in VB, without the possibility to edit imports but at least with the possibility to fix broken ones by loading the data that failed to be retrieved from the Web would be a nice addendum. One more thing on the desiderata list 😊
Currently, the best solution in case of owl:imports that cannot be resolved form the web is to load your dataset in Showvoc in a quad format that includes, in their respective graphs, also the imported ontologies. As I know you are using VB (at least for those datasets you directly manage), you can do this from the “export data” by:
    1. Selecting multiple graphs (the default is that only the main graph with the edited dataset is exported)
    2. Selecting a quad format for storage (e.g. N-QUADS)
    3. One more thing when loading data in ShowVoc: depending on the version being used, you might have an option for “flattening graphs”. The default is false and you have to keep it false. Unfortunately, in older versions this option is not available and graphs were flattened by default (i.e. all graphs of the source data end up in the main graph in SV’s dataset). This should be not a big issue, but I’m reporting these instructions in case that you have a more recent version and can do things more properly
  3. Oh, that’s strange. Which version of SV are you using? I tested on the current development version and it works. Maybe this was a past bug, I’ll check it

Kind regards,

Armando

Dear Armando,

Yes indeed my queries are about GUI customization of one dataset only, done by the admin, and valida for all users (as opposed to the costomization that each user can do for themselves). So my questions refer to the explorations of the "Administration dashboard", tab Datasets.
Then, regarding to the points raised earlier:

hiding datatypes is corrently not available. May I suggest that this is added to the wishlist for future improvements? 🙂
Indeed the ontology was not imported properly in SV. I exported from VB and imported in SV as said, and it now goes alright 🙂 🙂
I am using SV 5.0.0. Yesteday, I was working with two browsers - one for the Administration dashboard (Chrome), the other for testing, not logged in (DuckDuckGo). This morning I added a third browser, Edge. In Edge, I find the tabs displayed as expected.

Many thanks for your kind support!

Best
Caterina

Dear Caterina,

  1. Added. Can’t promise anything on the short term. As you may have noticed it’s a very long time since the last release (it’s the longest span in the history of both VocBench and ShowVoc :-) ), due to a series of coincident major improvements and new features that required breaking much of the system integrity and rebuilding it from scratch. We are full throttle towards the next incoming release, then we will be back looking at these details. Anyway, yes, it’s on the list now ;-)
  2. Glad it worked :-)
  3. I tried with Chrome (I’m using Edge most of the time, but they are sharing the same engine, Chromium)  ..but then discovered what probably happened and it has nothing to do with the browser. If you access as an admin or dataset manager,  you get the tools tab. If you are in visitor mode, you don’t see the tab (and can’t even decide to show it, you simply have no access to it)

Kind Regards,

Armando
