This little 14-year-old boy, disregarding danger, jumped into the sea to save lives in the recent boat accident in Hai Van Pass, Da Nang. True hero. People like this bring out the best in us humans.

Cậu bé 14 tuổi cứu sống 11 người trên biển

Nước da đen nhẻm, dáng người nhỏ thó là ấn tượng đầu tiên về cậu bé Trần Văn Truyền, người trực tiếp cứu sống 11 nạn nhân và tham gia vớt 8 thi thể trong vụ đắm thuyền ở vùng biển bãi Hẳm, dưới chân đèo Hải Vân, thành phố Đà Nẵng.

Vụ tai nạn xảy ra trưa 29/4, tại vùng biển thuộc phường Hòa Hiệp Bắc, quận Liên Chiểu, thành phố Đà Nẵng. Một nhóm gồm 24 người, phần lớn trú quận Hải Châu, cùng thuê tàu cá công suất nhỏ, không biển kiểm soát đi du lịch ra làng Vân và đảo Ngọc. Tàu gặp sóng to, gió lớn đã va vào đá và chìm. 8 người đã thiệt mạng, 15 người khác bị thương nặng.

Thảm hoạ sẽ nghiêm trọng hơn nếu không có sự hiện diện của cha con ông Trần Văn Mến và Trần Văn Truyền đang làm rẫy gần đó. Cậu bé Truyền 14 tuổi, ngồi câu cá trên gành đá bãi Hẳm đã vô tình phát hiện thuyền chở người bị đắm. Em nhanh trí chạy lên rẫy báo với cha và tri hô để tìm thêm người đi cứu nạn.

Loay hoay rồi ông Mến cũng nghĩ ra cách tháo hệ thống ống nhựa dùng tưới hoa màu trên rẫy để quăng ra biển cho nạn nhân bám vào. Nhưng gành đá bãi Hẳm trơn nhẵn, sóng lại đánh liên hồi nên dây quăng nhiều lần mà nạn nhân không bắt được. Chẳng ngần ngại, Truyền đã lao ra biển dữ để mang một đầu dây ra cho nạn nhân.

Một cán bộ UBND phường Hoà Hiệp Nam cho biết, bãi Hẳm, nơi xảy ra vụ tai nạn đắm thuyền, là một trong những bãi nguy hiểm. Sát mét nước là đáy vực, nước sâu thẳm và sóng thất thường nên mới có tên là bãi Hẳm. "Nơi này không có ai dám bơi. Thế nhưng thấy cảnh người ngoi ngóp chờ chết, cháu Truyền đã quên hiểm nguy mà lao ra trên đầu sóng dữ để cứu người. Hành động đó ngay cả người dân chài, lớn tuổi như chúng tôi cũng khó có được", cán bộ này nói.

Hôm nhận giấy khen tại buổi tuyên dương của UBND quận Liên Chiểu, cả Truyền và cha không nói được lời nào. Hành động anh hùng ấy của họ bộc phát từ trái tim nhân hậu, từ trách nhiệm của con người mà ngay chính Truyền, bây giờ nghĩ lại cũng không hiểu vì sao mình đã... liều như vậy? Truyền nói: "Cháu thấy người sắp chết nhiều quá nên lao ra cứu họ thôi chứ có nghĩ chi mô".

Riêng ông Dương Thành Thị, Chủ tịch UBND quận Liên Chiểu thì không cầm được nước mắt. Ông nói: "Ở cái tuổi 14, các cháu được cha mẹ chăm bẵm, chỉ biết ăn học thôi. Riêng Truyền phải một buổi theo cha ra rẫy phụ giúp chuyện nhà nông. Ngày lễ lạt, người ta dắt díu nhau đi tham quan, còn cháu vẫn phải ra rẫy... Chúng tôi không chỉ cảm kích hành động dũng cảm, xứng đáng phong tặng anh hùng của cháu Truyền mà còn rất cảm động vì gia cảnh bần hàn nhà cháu".

Năm 2000, gia đình cháu Truyền bị thu hồi đất vì thuộc dự án xây dựng hầm đường bộ Hải Vân. Không còn ruộng, mẹ phải đi làm thuê chạy từng bữa cơm, cha Truyền phải lần mò ra tận mũi làng Vân khai hoang, làm rẫy. Chị gái đầu bỏ học dở dang ở lớp 9. Còn Truyền lầm lũi cuốc bộ đi học đường xa, một buổi men theo đường tàu ra phụ cha làm rẫy.

Ra làng Vân không có đường bộ, hoặc đi thuyền, hoặc phải lê bộ trên đường thoắt trên đường ray tàu lửa, Truyền đen nhẻm, nhỏ thó như con sóc. Và ít nhất đã 2 lần cậu bé đã tham gia cứu người bị nạn trên đường tàu.

Năm 2005, trên đường ra rẫy, cha con Truyền phát hiện một nạn nhân bị tàu cán. Truyền đi nhặt từng phần thi thể của nạn nhân để rồi 2 cha con khăn gói đưa ra tận Phú Bài, Thừa Thiên - Huế cho gia đình họ. Năm 2006, cũng trên đường sắt đi ra rẫy, cha con Truyền đã phát hiện 2 mẹ con (người dân làng Vân) bị tàu cán văng vào bìa rừng. Truyền ôm cháu bé bê bết máu, chui qua hầm số 1, chạy ngược về trạm y tế. Cháu bé đã được cấp cứu kịp thời.

Hiện Trần Văn Truyền được UBND quận Liên Chiểu đề nghị Hội đồng thi đua khen thưởng thành phố khen thưởng cấp thành phố, nêu gương anh hùng trong các trường học phổ thông... Còn Truyền thì vẫn lầm lũi một buổi đến trường, một buổi men theo đường tàu ra rẫy giúp cha.

Dear CACC,

I was very sad to hear about the news of the acccident, so many losts of lives becauses of a careless ship owner. But at the same time, my heart felt warm learning about the brave boy.

He brings so much hope and trust. I wish Truyen will have chance to grow and study, such a great heart and mind should be nourished with great love and careness.

Dear anh Shane, chi Thu Thuy & CACC,

You are truly a wise man, anh Shane. Of course, our little friend Truyen is a hero. But it is also true that because we humans are fascinated with dramatic actions, we often forget that the true heroes/heroines are the people who do their inglorious, unglamorous job day in and day out to make life better for other people, including soldiers, crime fighters like the police, the teachers and, of course, our mothers, as chi Thu Thuy and anh Shane said.

I have always marvelled at the strength of the Vietnamese women. Most Vietnamese women were not with the husband much at all. They single-handedly raised the children. They buried their husbands, who died in battle. They raised their children, saw their boys off to war, then buried them soon later. And they kept going strong to raise the rest of the children, without complaining, without requesting compensation, without every claiming to be heroine.

It is truly amazing, that we "youngsters" couldn't not fathom. Today, we no longer have war, but the Vietnamese women still are, as always has been, the pillar of their family. Our tradition is such that all responsibility of the family falls on the mother's shoulders. In Vietnamese, we say "Thie^n chu+'c la`m me." (Heaven-given position of mother." So true!

  I am moved by the plight of anh Hoanh's current situation to ask this

Who is a Hero / Heroine?

  There is no doubt that young Truyen is brave - maybe braver than most
of the rest of us. The results of his actions certainly show us how
brave Truyen is, but does that make him a "Hero"?

  I know many of my beloved CACC will disagree with me, but I believe
the true Heros/Heroines of the world are the people like anh Hoanh's
ailing Mom. The people who scrimp and scratch and save every day for
years on end in order to try to give their children a better life than
their own. If you agree with this thought, then anh Hoanh's Mom is a
"Champion of Heroines".

  I will never belittle em Truyen's bravery, but his efforts are an
isolated event - all people can be brave in an isolated instance or
circumstance. Military people will understand. Few people can be so
brave over many, many years and with so many difficulties to overcome.

  Anh Hoanh, to me, YOUR MOM is the true representation of a Heroine:
she nurtured and guided all of her children through difficulties most of
us "youngsters" cannot imagine. I truly believe that success in life is
built on the foundations of a mother's knee.

Chi Phuong, please be your own Heroine for anh Hoanh and his family.
If there is only one thing I have learned from Vietnam, it is that
Vietnamese women are the strongest people on earth.

May the Buddha, God, Allah, Shiva and all the world's God's bid anh
Hoanh's Mom a full recovery.

Thank you so much for your writing. As a Vietnamese girl, I don't understand deeply the great position of our great Vietnamese woman. I admire my grandma, my mom but by your deep thinking, you really awake me with the great virtues of my grand ma, my mom that in my daily life, I haven't paid much attention to.

My dearest anh Shane and CACC,

Thank you so much for your prayers for our mother. Today I have good news to share with you all. Our mother came home this pass Monday. At the moment she's still very weak, her right arm still unable to move and she's still depend on a few medical equipments to function on a day to day basic. But she is fully awake and love to talk to everyone of us in the family. The first thing she said when she saw my face on Monday night was "Hom nay may chet o dau vay?". I can't help but burst out laughing because she's back to herself already. Although it may take time, but I believe she is on her way to recovery. Again, thank you all for your emotional support and well wishes during our family most difficult time.

Anh Shane oi, I'm also very moved with your message. No wonder why I'm always very fond of you from the first day we met in Sai Gon. Honestly though, I do not know how to go about being a heroine for anh Hoanh and his family as you said, but I have been living my life in a way how I was being raised by my wonderful mother and my wonderful maternal grandfather. I am so fortunate to have role models like them bringing me into this world and taught me to live my life in a way that I should not add to the misery and sorrow of the world, but shall smile, unashamed, to the infinite delight and mystery of it.

May God, Buddha, Allah, Shiva bless you all.

Dear anh Shane, chi Tammy & CACC,

Thanks, Phuong, for sharing the news. It is indeed good news that mom comes home. But that is only the beginning of a long journey of rehabilitation. For the last week, I have been by her bed day and night, to make sure that everything is OK. Nursing at home is not easy, but we prefer home over nursing home. We think she is better off with us at home.

I have always told people: "No experience you gain in life is wasted." Now I have got a chance to prove that I am correct. The first job I had in the US many years ago was orderly in a nursing home--the job of taking care of old and sick folks the way you would take care one-year-old babies, except that older folks are much heavier. That job, though really tough for a young immigrant in a new land, taught me to appreciate the loneliness of older people and how to take care of them. Other than feeding and daily hygiene, some patients wanted me to talk to them or read the Bible for them. I used such opportunity to practice English, because I had to talk and read very slowly, very loudly and very clearly for them to understand me.

Now many years later, that nursing skill has its use again for mom. So, I've told you, no experience of yours will ever be lost!

But it is going to be a long hard road. It is the road that will try our patient. And any wrong move could be severely damaging. So we're hanging tight, hanging tough. And praying.

Anh Shane oi, I would love to claim for the credit :-), but I'm reluctantly have to tell you that the person who just graduated from the University is my youngest sister in law, not our daughter :-) . So, the credit have to go to Mom and Dad anh Shane oi :-(((.

Tomorrow morning I'll go see Mom again and I'll certainly deliver your message. I promise I'll let you know how she would response. Vietnamese children in 'different' social settings ? Surely anh Shane, I would love to talk to you about this interesting subject when time permit.

Every time she saw CK and other children she would asked the same also. We're very glad that now she's home with us kids. On Monday I asked her was she happy that now she's home with her children, she answered yes.

You know what, I admire your endeavor, skill and spirit in taking care of your mpm. Sincerely, the young people in my age usually have a much better life than yours. We only come to school and face up with the test. we don't serve the others. The others serve us, instead. It makes us forget a good habit, a habit of taking care of the others. If my family member get sick, I am not sure if I have a good skill and strong spirit to overcome so many struggles.

Dear sis Huong,

Thank you for your well wishes. Don't underestimate yourself Huong. If some day you are call for the task, I believe you would have the same skill, spirit (if not even more) to serve your love ones.

How ? Out of Love and Respect Huong. Our Mom has lived her life in an inspirational, virtuous way that she would command respect and love from people around her. She always gave more of herself, not only to her children but also to her sisters and brothers as well(before she being admitted to the hospital for her operation she sent all of her saving to all of her relatives in VN to make sure that they'll be taking care of, just in case she didn't make it. Just to think about this, it make me want to cry). She always know what right from wrong and whenever she realized she did something wrong she would listened and apologized and tried her best to correct the situation. She never ask for anything for her self. In being around her and see that she's human like everyone else but always try to live her life the best way she know how, you can't help yourself but love and respect her so much that you wouldn't dare do anything to add to her suffering but you would like to do just about anything for her because you want to help make her life more enjoyable and more comfortable.

Any of us human, when we were young, we all had to depend on our elders to served us ;-) at one point until we are capable of serving ourselves, right ? By doing well in school and facing well with your tests, in a way, you're already serving your family well Huong. Your awareness of yourself, your surrounding, and your eagerness to learn and improve yourself will serve you to become a fine human being one day !
